The New Lineup
Whataburger is expanding its Bacon Wrangler platform for the first time, pairing the returning Bacon Wrangler Double with an all-new Bacon Wrangler Chicken when both items hit menus on Aug. 18. The move signals a deliberate effort by the San Antonio-based chain to broaden the reach of a proven limited-time offer rather than simply cycling a crowd-pleaser back onto the menu unchanged.
The Bacon Wrangler Double — making its second appearance after a successful debut last summer — features two fresh, 100% beef patties with American and Monterey Jack cheeses, bacon, crispy onion strings, pickles, and smoky chipotle aioli on toasted buns. A Jr. size, also stacked with two beef patties, gives operators a lower price-point entry into the platform. The burger starts at $9.99, with prices varying by location.
The Chicken Play
The Bacon Wrangler Chicken is the more strategically significant addition. Guests can select from a classic Whatachick'n®, Spicy Chicken, or Grilled Chicken filet — each topped with Monterey Jack cheese, bacon, and the same signature chipotle aioli toppings that defined the original lineup. Starting at $7.99, the chicken variant opens the Bacon Wrangler to a broader guest segment and gives operators three SKU variations within a single LTO framework. "This time around, we wanted to give Guests another way to enjoy those same craveable flavors by introducing the all-new Bacon Wrangler Chicken," said Whataburger Corporate Chef James Sanchez.
Operator Context
The Bacon Wrangler expansion is a textbook example of platform LTO strategy — a growing tactic across the QSR and fast-casual segments where chains introduce a core flavor profile and then extend it across proteins to maximize marketing investment and menu versatility. For Whataburger, which operates more than 1,200 restaurants across 17 states, the limited-time framing also drives urgency without permanently inflating menu complexity.
The chain is supporting the launch through its loyalty app, which auto-enrolls new account holders with a free Whataburger and points accrual — a mechanic that ties LTO excitement directly into its digital retention funnel. For operators tracking beverage and food LTO performance across the broader foodservice industry, Whataburger's approach of coupling a returning fan-favorite with a new protein extension offers a replicable template for sustaining guest interest across a multi-week promotional window. Both items are available for a limited time at participating locations.
