United Airlines has become the first carrier to let passengers stream their personal Spotify accounts directly on seatback screens, raising the bar for inflight entertainment and setting a new benchmark for personalized passenger experience in the hospitality industry.

The integration, powered by Starlink Wi-Fi, lets travelers scan a QR code on the seatback screen to securely link their Spotify account. If Spotify is already open on their phone, the pairing requires just a single click. From there, passengers access their full saved library — playlists, personalized recommendations, music, podcasts, audiobooks, and video content — and can pick up exactly where they left off before boarding. Passengers are automatically logged out at the end of each flight.

Engagement Numbers

The new account-linked functionality builds on a partnership United first launched in June 2025, when the airline introduced a curated Spotify content collection featuring more than 450 hours of audiobooks, video podcasts, and music playlists. Since that initial rollout, more than 2.3 million customers have consumed more than 1.9 million hours of Spotify content onboard — data points that illustrate both the demand for streaming-quality entertainment in the air and the commercial opportunity for hospitality operators investing in personalized guest experiences.

"Our customers are used to streaming entertainment that's tailored to them, and that level of personalization shouldn't stop when they board one of our planes," said Andrew Nocella, Chief Commercial Officer at United Airlines. "From video podcasts and live performances to music and audiobooks, our collaboration with Spotify gives customers more of what they love onboard."

Fleet Expansion Plans

The Spotify app integration is currently live on Starlink-equipped aircraft, with the rollout set to expand to half of United's fleet by next spring. The airline already operates more than 181,000 seatback screens — more than any other major U.S. carrier — and expects to reach more than 219,000 screens by the end of 2027, encompassing nearly its entire mainline fleet. Starlink Wi-Fi installation is also expected to reach full fleet coverage before the close of 2027.

Beyond Spotify, United's inflight entertainment catalog spans more than 2,500 hours of premium content, including programming from Apple TV, HBO Max, A24, and Peacock. The airline's accelerating investment in personalized, connected entertainment mirrors a broader trend across the hospitality sector, where operators from hotel brands to cruise lines are integrating guests' personal streaming accounts into in-room and in-cabin screens.

For foodservice and hospitality professionals tracking how loyalty ecosystems evolve, United's model — tying personalized content to its MileagePlus program and Starlink connectivity — offers a framework worth watching. As beverage and dining experiences onboard increasingly become part of the broader passenger value proposition, entertainment personalization is emerging as an equally critical driver of brand loyalty and repeat business in travel hospitality.
