TenGoku, the MICHELIN-recognized izakaya-style Japanese gastropub in Chicago's West Loop, is introducing a late-night hand roll omakase experience starting August 27. The seven-course, chef-crafted offering costs $45 per person and runs from 8:30 p.m. Sunday–Thursday and 9:30 p.m. Friday–Saturday. Prepaid reservations through Resy are required.

What's on the Menu Hand rolls will feature rotating fresh fish selections sourced from Japan's renowned fish markets, including Toyosu Market, alongside kushiyaki-inspired hand rolls that reference TenGoku's name, which means "grill heaven." The experience is designed for a relaxed evening pace, inviting guests to "grab a drink, settle in with friends, and enjoy without the formality of a traditional omakase." Japanese highballs, sake, beer, wine, and additional à la carte menu items are available to pair with the omakase.

Building on Existing Success The late-night omakase builds on momentum from TenGoku's hand roll happy hour and the recent addition of hand rolls to its all-you-can-eat Saturday brunch. The restaurant is from the team behind MICHELIN-recognized Omakase Yume and Bonyeon, Chicago's first steak omakase.

Why It Matters

As omakase experiences become more accessible price points—moving beyond the $100-plus tasting tradition—venues like TenGoku are capturing after-hours diners seeking quality sushi craftsmanship in a casual setting. The late-night positioning also capitalizes on izakaya's inherent appeal as a social, drink-forward environment.
