Sands China has begun deploying Amap's Tutu robot dogs as official guest guides at Sands Resorts Macau, marking one of the more concrete applications of embodied AI in large-scale hospitality operations. The first batch of Tutu units was handed over at a ceremony held at NBA House at The Venetian Macao, where the robots had already logged a full operational trial before transitioning to the broader resort campus.

Debut Performance

The NBA House activation served as a live stress test. Over a single 11-hour shift, Tutu completed 214 requests for directions to facilities including restrooms and service counters, answered 4,546 questions across Chinese and English, and traveled more than 40 kilometers — the equivalent of 456 laps around a basketball court. The robot maintained conversational context as guests switched languages mid-interaction and posed follow-up questions, a capability that distinguishes it from simpler kiosk-style wayfinding tools. Duties ranged from recommending food options to guiding children to restrooms and exchanging fist bumps with NBA fans.

At the handover ceremony, Tutu walked autonomously from a waiting area to the main stage, navigating around obstacles without a remote control or leash. Dr. DeVonne Iao, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Resort Marketing at Sands China, presented the robot with a staff badge. "This is our new step to bring tourism and technology together, and we look forward to Tutu making the resort experience more convenient and welcoming for visitors," Iao said.

Beyond the Robot

The partnership extends well past the physical robot. Amap will layer resort-wide indoor navigation across Sands properties, mapping floors, walkways, retail shops, and public facilities. The platform's spatial intelligence technology will also generate 3D models of selected resort areas, giving visitors the ability to preview venues from multiple angles inside the Amap app before they arrive — a capability with clear implications for pre-arrival planning and reducing on-property congestion at information desks.

For hospitality operators tracking restaurant technology coverage, the Sands-Amap model is worth watching. Scaling robot service from a contained event venue to a multi-property resort introduces meaningfully different operational demands: longer service windows, requests distributed across a larger footprint, and tighter coordination with existing human staff workflows. Amap CFO Zhou Haijing framed the deployment in explicitly long-term terms: "The true value of this partnership lies in Tutu's ability to deliver reliable service during peak periods and become an integral part of the resorts' service operations."

Operator Implications

For the broader hospitality and foodservice industry, the Sands deployment illustrates a maturation in robot deployment strategy — moving from novelty demonstration toward operational integration. Properties considering similar technology will need to evaluate task-scheduling infrastructure, multi-robot coordination, and how autonomous units slot into existing service hierarchies rather than simply supplement them. The Macau rollout provides a rare data-rich case study in high-traffic, multilingual, mixed-use environments that mirror the complexity of large hotels, convention centers, and integrated resort dining operations.

As beverage industry analysis and foodservice coverage increasingly intersect with hospitality tech, robot-assisted guest services are moving from pilot curiosity to operational planning consideration — particularly for properties managing high visitor volumes with constrained front-of-house labor.
