Royal Caribbean Officially Welcomes Legend of the Seas
Royal Caribbean has officially taken delivery of Legend of the Seas, the third Icon Class ship built at Meyer Turku's shipyard in Turku, Finland. The handover ceremony on June 11, 2026, marked the transfer of the 250,800-ton vessel from the Finnish builder to the cruise operator ahead of the ship's July 2026 European debut.
Expansion of Icon Class Lineup
The delivery represents a significant milestone in Royal Caribbean's long-term growth strategy. The cruise line has secured shipbuilding capacity through Meyer Turku extending to 2036, with orders including Icon 5 (2028), Icon 6 (2029), and Icon 7 (2030).
"Today's delivery of Legend of the Seas marks another important milestone in our ambition to continuously redefine the vacation experience," said Jason Liberty, chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. "This new ship reflects the strength of the vacation ecosystem we are building – combining industry-leading ships, innovative technology, and exceptional experiences for our guests. It is an achievement only possible through the extraordinary partnership and expertise of Meyer Turku and the thousands of talented people whose creativity and commitment continue to help us design the future of vacations."
More than 1,200 crew members and partners attended the delivery celebration, which included representatives from both companies, including Meyer Turku CEO Casimir Lindholm.
European Deployment and Caribbean Rotation
Legend will sail 7-night Western Mediterranean itineraries from Barcelona, Spain, and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy, this summer. In November 2026, the ship will relocate to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to operate 6-night Western Caribbean and 8-night Southern Caribbean cruises, with all voyages including a port call at Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day CocoCay.
Dining and Entertainment Expansion
The vessel introduces 28 dining venues—described as "the most dining at sea"—including new concepts such as Hollywoodland Supper Club, an elevated dinner inspired by old Hollywood; Royal Railway – Legend Station, a five-course immersive train dining experience; and AquaDome Market, an all-inclusive food hall with five culinary concepts.
Entertainment offerings span stage, water, air, and ice venues with productions tailored to families and multigenerational groups. Legend will feature Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and America's Got Talent LIVE, along with performances at the AquaTheater and ice-skating spectacles at Absolute Zero.
Family-Focused Amenities
The ship offers seven pools including Royal Bay, described as the largest at sea, alongside adult-only venues such as The Hideaway and Swim & Tonic. Adventure activities include Crown's Edge, a skywalk and zip line experience 154 feet above the ocean; Category 6 waterpark; rock climbing at Adrenaline Peak; and the FlowRider surf simulator.
Signature Icon Class features include the Royal Promenade with floor-to-ceiling ocean views, Central Park with more than 30,500 real plants, and the Pearl kinetic art sculpture. Suites include a redesigned three-story Ultimate Family Townhouse with a slide and dedicated entertainment spaces.
Environmental Profile
Legend is Royal Caribbean's fourth liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ship and will feature industry-standard environmental programs including waste heat recovery systems and shore power connections. The company targets delivery of a net-zero cruise ship by 2035.
"We're incredibly proud to introduce Legend of the Seas to vacationers and continue the legacy of the revolutionary Icon Class," said Michael Bayley, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean. "This wouldn't be possible without the many talented individuals that came together to deliver what is truly the ultimate family vacation, and we look forward to making Legend's debut this summer a legendary one."
"Legend of the Seas is the third Icon Class ship built at our shipyard, and constructing the series has enabled us to develop our production processes in a systematic way," said Casimir Lindholm, CEO of Meyer Turku. "We have built on the experience gained from the previous vessels and further improved efficiency with the customer and our extensive partner network. The ship is an exceptional project in terms of both scale and technical complexity, requiring strong expertise and seamless collaboration across the entire maritime cluster."
Why It Matters
For F&B operators, Legend's debut signals continued consolidation of dining complexity across the cruise industry—28 venues represent a significant operational undertaking. The emphasis on immersive dining experiences and specialized venues (Hollywoodland Supper Club, Royal Railway) reflects broader cruise industry trends toward elevated food offerings as a revenue and differentiation driver. The ship's LNG propulsion and ongoing environmental commitments also underscore regulatory pressures shaping vessel design and operational standards across the sector.
