New York Icons Join JFK Terminal 5
Airport hospitality operator OTG has opened three celebrated New York dining brands at John F. Kennedy International Airport's Terminal 5: Melt Shop, The Halal Guys, and Nom Wah Tea Parlor. The openings represent the first wave of more than 40 new concessions planned for the terminal through a $100 million refresh led by JetBlue and developer Fraport USA Inc.
Flagship Brands Expand Beyond NYC
Melt Shop, founded in New York City in 2011, brings its gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and hand-spun shakes to the terminal. The Halal Guys, which grew from a legendary Midtown street cart into an international chain, will serve their signature platters of halal chicken and gyro with white sauce. Nom Wah Tea Parlor—operating since 1920 as Manhattan's oldest continuously operating dim sum restaurant—introduces handmade dumplings and classic dim sum to Terminal 5 travelers.
The Operator's Vision
"Airports can often feel rushed and transactional," said OTG CEO Matt King. "Our goal is to create dining experiences that feel authentic and memorable, offering guests the same beloved brands they would seek out across New York City. Partnering with Melt Shop, The Halal Guys, and Nom Wah allows us to bring iconic flavors to Terminal 5 and give travelers a moment to pause, relax, and enjoy great food."
OTG operates airport dining and hospitality concepts across major North American airports, partnering with airports, chefs, and brands to deliver tech-enabled food and beverage experiences.
Strategic Partnerships Drive Development
The openings are enabled through OTG's partnership with JetBlue and Fraport USA Inc., alongside Shri Krishna, Inc., a New York-based small business joint venture partner certified by the U.S. Department of Transportation as an Airport Concession Disadvantaged Business Enterprise.
Port Authority General Manager Teresa Rizzuto said: "Congratulations to OTG for adding three distinctively New York dining experiences to JFK International Airport's Terminal 5, where JetBlue and Fraport USA Inc. have launched a $100 million refresh of the airline's flagship terminal. The addition of Melt Shop, The Halal Guys and Nom Wah Tea Parlor align with the Port Authority's vision for a new JFK that will create a uniquely New York experience that will become an enjoyable part of the passenger journey."
Fraport Vice President Jose Cuevas added: "We are excited to welcome The Halal Guys, Melt Shop, and Nom Wah Restaurant and Nom Wah Bar to JFK Terminal 5, iconic New York brands that each bring bold flavors and a strong sense of identity to the terminal. Together, they add real depth and energy to T5's culinary program and reflect the spirit of New York's dining scene."
Broader Terminal Modernization
Terminal 5's refresh includes new art installations, a redesigned center concourse inspired by New York's iconic parks, and over 18 new local food and beverage options. The improvements are expected to complete by the end of 2026 and align with the Port Authority's $19 billion transformation of JFK Airport overall.
JetBlue Senior Vice President of Marketing and Brand Stephanie Evans Greene said: "As we continue to refresh Terminal 5, we know nothing says New York like great food and the energy of people on the go. The Halal Guys, Melt Shop, and Nom Wah are the kinds of New York favorites our customers can get excited about, and we're excited to welcome them to T5."
Why It Matters
For airport operators and F&B concessionaires, the Terminal 5 expansion signals a continued shift toward leveraging recognized local brands to differentiate airport dining. OTG's model—pairing established concepts with thoughtful curation—offers a template for competitive terminals seeking to reduce passenger perception of transactional dining. With 40+ concessions planned and an emphasis on New York-centric branding, Terminal 5 is positioning itself as a destination within a destination, a strategy that could influence F&B strategies at other major hubs navigating post-pandemic traffic recovery.
