A Thousand-Year Tradition Meets Modern QSR
Nan Xiang Soup Dumplings is rolling out limited-time zongzi specials across its 10-location footprint in the Northeast to mark this year's Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival) on June 19th.
The glutinous rice dumplings, wrapped in bamboo leaves and filled with either matcha red bean (sweet) or Shanghai pork (savory), will retail for $9.50 per two-piece order. The chain is also offering a Dragon Boat Festival Bundle for $28, which includes six zongzi (mix and match) packaged in a traditional bamboo basket.
The Zongzi Origin Story
The sticky rice dumplings commemorate an ancient Chinese legend. According to tradition, the festival celebrates poet Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in the Milou River in response to political turmoil. "Local villagers raced their boats into the river and dropped lumps of rice into the water to keep the fish and evil spirits away from his body," according to the festival's origin narrative. "Over time, the story evolved into a yearly tradition observed on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar."
Zongzi have remained a cornerstone of Dragon Boat Festival celebrations for nearly 1,000 years across China, typically made with glutinous rice and various fillings, then wrapped in bamboo leaves into triangular shapes.
Locations
Nan Xiang operates 10 locations: three in New York (Flushing, Koreatown, East Village); two in New Jersey (Cherry Hill); two in Pennsylvania (King of Prussia, Pittsburgh); and one each in Maryland (Bethesda), Delaware (Newark), and Connecticut (Stamford).
Why It Matters
Asian cuisine chains continue to capitalize on cultural celebrations as a vehicle for limited-time offerings and foot traffic. For operators, the Dragon Boat Festival represents a seasonal opportunity to drive sales through heritage-focused menu innovation—particularly among Asian diners and those seeking authentic cultural experiences.
