A $30 million, multi-phase renovation at Mohegan Sun Arena will gut and rebuild the Connecticut venue's food and beverage infrastructure, replacing legacy beer garden outlets with expanded Marketplace concepts featuring more than 30 taps, craft cocktails, and full grill kitchens — a significant operational upgrade for one of the Northeast's highest-volume entertainment venues.
The F&B Overhaul
The first renovation phase, launching when the Arena closes December 15 for a roughly two-month window, centers heavily on hospitality infrastructure. Existing beer garden outlets will be converted into Marketplace-style destinations with broader menus and upgraded kitchen equipment. One Marketplace location, positioned at the Arena's north end, will deploy Amazon's "Just Walk Out" technology — a frictionless checkout system that eliminates traditional point-of-sale queuing, a move that reflects growing operator interest in throughput solutions for high-traffic foodservice environments. New LED screens, refreshed concourse finishes, and upgraded restroom facilities round out the first phase's guest-facing improvements.
For foodservice and hospitality operators watching the casino-entertainment segment, the Marketplace conversion signals a broader industry shift away from single-category concession stands toward diversified, bar-forward food halls capable of capturing per-cap spend across beverage and food categories simultaneously. Full kitchen buildouts also allow for more complex menu execution than traditional arena concessions typically support.
Premium Hospitality Expansion
Phase two, targeted for 2027, adds a nearly 4,000-square-foot VIP lounge connected to the Casino of the Sky entrance. Designed to hold up to 150 guests, the lounge will offer a full bar and elevated pre-show dining — a premium hospitality tier that casino-resort venues increasingly rely on to differentiate their event proposition and drive ancillary revenue beyond ticket sales.
"The goal is simple: to create a more immersive, comfortable and thrilling venue for fans as well as our artists and promoters," said Joe Soper, VP of Sports & Entertainment for Mohegan. Jeff Hamilton, President & GM of Mohegan Sun, framed the broader investment as part of a long-term resort strategy: "We're focused on reimagining how guests experience Mohegan Sun at every touchpoint, from live entertainment and dining to accommodations and premium amenities."
Reopening and What Comes Next
The Arena is scheduled to reopen February 28 with a Breaking Benjamin headlining concert, followed by a robust spring and summer calendar. The renovation was developed in collaboration with SCI Architects. Construction will proceed alongside the Arena's active event schedule except during the mid-December to mid-February closure window.
The Arena has hosted more than 4,250 performances and welcomed nearly 18 million guests since opening in 2001. Beyond this project, Mohegan Sun has also disclosed a separate $22 million renovation of its Earth Tower hotel property, set to begin next summer — underscoring the resort's commitment to full-property reinvestment as competition among destination casino-entertainment venues intensifies.
