Rail carrier CPKC moved a combined record volume of grain and grain products across Canada and the United States in October 2026, posting all-time monthly highs for both total carloads and metric tonnes — a development with direct implications for food manufacturers, ingredient buyers, and foodservice supply chains dependent on North American grain flows.

Canadian Numbers

In Canada, CPKC transported 3.26 million metric tonnes (MMT) and 33,822 carloads of grain and grain products during October — the third consecutive record month to open the 2026–2027 crop year, surpassing previous highs set in October 2022. Through Week 13 of the crop year, the railway has now moved more than 8.5 MMT and 88,064 carloads of Canadian grain and grain products, a cumulative pace that suggests sustained supply availability for processors and buyers sourcing from Western Canada.

U.S. Performance

South of the border, CPKC hauled 2.65 MMT and 27,739 carloads in October 2026, eclipsing the previous U.S. monthly record set in October 2024. The carrier has now set U.S. monthly grain records in five of the last six months — May, June, July, September, and October — a run that underscores the railway's growing role in moving American grain harvests to export terminals and domestic processors. When Canadian and U.S. volumes are combined, October 2026 represents an all-time single-month record for the network on both a carload and tonnage basis.

Why It Matters for Food Operators

For food and beverage manufacturers, restaurant operators, and hospitality procurement teams, robust rail grain throughput is a leading indicator of ingredient availability and, potentially, pricing stability. Grain supply chain bottlenecks — whether caused by port congestion, weather disruptions, or rail capacity constraints — have historically translated into elevated costs for flour, corn-based ingredients, animal feed, and malt, all of which flow through to menu and production costs.

John Brooks, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at CPKC, pointed to an above-average North American crop as a key tailwind. "With another above-average North American crop and the unmatched reach of CPKC's three-nation network to global markets, we are well positioned to deliver another strong grain season, driving solid volume performance while providing reliable service across the grain supply chain," Brooks said.

The railway's three-nation footprint — spanning Canada, the United States, and México — gives it access to major ports from Vancouver to the Gulf Coast to Lázaro Cárdenas, routes that are critical for exporting grain to international markets and for importing ingredients into North American food manufacturing hubs. That connectivity is increasingly relevant to foodservice supply chain analysis as operators track ingredient sourcing across borders.

CPKC published its 2026–2027 Grain Service Outlook Report in July 2026, detailing its capacity and service plans for the crop year — a document that procurement teams tracking grain and commodity trends in the beverage and food industries may find useful as they model ingredient costs through mid-2027.
