Chef Ryan Roadhouse of Portland's Nodoguro has been named the 2026 James Beard Award winner for Best Chef: Northwest & Pacific, the award presented June 15 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The recognition caps a 28-year career marked by nine prior nominations on the James Beard Awards semifinalist and finalist lists. Roadhouse began as a teenage dishwasher in a Japanese restaurant before building what has become one of the country's most distinctive dining experiences.

A Single-Room Vision Unlike many James Beard-honored chefs who expand

into restaurant groups, Roadhouse has remained devoted to Nodoguro's single dining room since opening in 2014, personally cooking for guests nightly. His menus draw inspiration from Japan, the Pacific Northwest, and cultures connected by the Pacific Ocean, with offerings shaped by seasonal relationships with fishers, farmers, foragers, and producers. "This award belongs to our team, our family, our mentors, and every guest who believed in what we were building," said Roadhouse. "Never stop dreaming."

Expansion and Influence The award arrives as Nodoguro enters a new chapter in downtown Portland.

What began as a pop-up is evolving into a larger space where food, sake, tea, books, travel, and conversation will converge under one roof. Nodoguro has sustained local and national recognition for its refined, ingredient-driven approach to Japanese-inspired cuisine. The restaurant was named Portland Monthly's Restaurant of the Year in 2015 and has been cited among Portland's top dining destinations by regional and national critics. Roadhouse received Portland Monthly's Rising Star Chef honor in 2014 and was named one of Plate Magazine's 30 Chefs to Watch. For Portland, the award underscores the city's continued draw for chefs choosing to build singular culinary visions rather than expand rapidly.
