Nine U.S. hotels are rolling out limited-time 'Turbulence Test' packages through Booking.com, pairing compatibility-themed activities with food and beverage perks — from $200 F&B credits at Lotte Hotel New York to make-your-own cocktail amenities in Orlando — as the platform looks to drive incremental bookings and spotlight its hospitality partners this fall.
The promotion, launching September 14, 2026, centers on a physical Turbulence Test Kit distributed at check-in, containing a travel-themed conversation deck, "Red Flag / Green Flag" speed rounds, and a blindfold for blind taste challenges. Individual properties layered in their own food and beverage hooks: Circa Resort & Casino in Las Vegas offers a $50 beverage credit and a Legacy Club champagne pour; Legacy Vacation Resorts Kissimmee features a Make Your Own Cocktail amenity; and The Elser Hotel in Miami incorporates a "305 Challenge" in which one partner selects restaurants while the other books the reservation time — a structure that directly drives on-property and local dining spend.
The Data Behind the Deals
Booking.com commissioned survey research to ground the promotion in consumer behavior. Among U.S. respondents, 58% said they would hesitate to travel again with someone who expects others to cover shared costs, and 42% cited surprise activity or upgrade bookings as the top source of travel tension. Nearly one-third said travel compatibility is "extremely important" to a relationship, and 35% reported discovering a companion was incompatible with them only after a trip. Relationship sociologist Dr. Jess Carbino, who consulted on the program, noted that travel "forces you to confront who you actually are" and functions as relationship acceleration — compressing months of everyday friction into days.
For hotel operators, those friction points are largely playing out in food, beverage, and activity spend — precisely the ancillary revenue lines properties have prioritized since the post-pandemic hospitality recovery. By embedding F&B credits and culinary experiences into the package structure, participating hotels gain a mechanism to lift per-guest spend while the experiential framing gives guests a reason to engage with outlets they might otherwise skip. This kind of hospitality experience programming has gained traction as a tool for differentiating mid-scale and upscale properties in crowded urban and resort markets.
Operator Implications
The participating portfolio spans four states and a range of property types — boutique urban hotels, adults-only casino resorts, and family-oriented vacation resorts — suggesting Booking.com is testing the concept across segments rather than limiting it to luxury. That breadth matters for operators evaluating similar experiential packaging: the underlying mechanics (a physical kit, a branded challenge, a modest F&B credit) are replicable at modest cost and can be adapted to a property's existing outlet lineup.
Money-related travel tension, per the survey data, is the single largest compatibility flashpoint — and the packages address it directly by pre-bundling costs and framing shared spending as part of the experience rather than a negotiation. Operators with strong restaurant and bar programming may find the format useful beyond the Booking.com promotion window, particularly for Valentine's Day, anniversary, or "workcation" packages where the food and beverage element is the primary differentiator.
The Turbulence Test packages are available exclusively through Booking.com listings for each participating property for a limited time beginning September 14, 2026.
