Guatemala's Zacapa Rum has released its first limited-edition expression outside the brand's core North American portfolio: the Zacapa 50th Anniversary Edition, a rum finished in American white oak barrels specially charred with Guatemalan cacao and Cobán chili peels. The release arrives on October 15 at a $49.99 SRP, available in select accounts across New York, California, Texas, and Florida.

The Liquid & Process

Master Blender Lorena Vásquez — who has led Zacapa's blending program for more than 40 years — assembled rums aged between 8 and 24 years for the expression. The blend follows Zacapa's established Solera System, moving through casks that previously held American whiskeys, Sherry wines, and Pedro Ximénez wines, as well as re-charred American white oak barrels, at the brand's aging facility more than 2,300 meters above sea level. Only after that progression does the liquid undergo the signature finishing step: additional maturation in barrels charred with cacao and Cobán chili peels, followed by a rest of several months in oak vats before bottling. On the palate, the result delivers toffee, roasted cacao, aromatic spice, and a lingering warm finish.

Vásquez drew the concept from pre-Columbian ceremonial culture. "For the 50th Anniversary Edition, I drew inspiration from ancient ceremonial celebrations in what is now Guatemala, where beverages made with cacao and chili were traditionally enjoyed as part of these gatherings," she said. "We wanted to honor that heritage while exploring a new expression of Zacapa through maturation."

On-Premise Opportunity

For bar and restaurant operators, the release comes with a ready-made signature serve: the GuateMai Tai, combining the Anniversary Edition with orange liqueur, orgeat, fresh lime juice, and aromatic bitters, slated for rollout at select on-premise accounts. Vásquez will also visit key U.S. markets for intimate consumer tastings, giving partnering venues an experiential programming hook during the anniversary window.

The bottle itself arrives in a commemorative canister featuring Zacapa's iconic handwoven petate band, reimagined in a colorful anniversary design — a detail that reinforces the brand's Guatemalan craft identity and gives the expression strong shelf and back-bar presence.

For spirits buyers and beverage program directors, the $49.99 price point positions the Anniversary Edition within the ultra-premium rum segment, which has seen growing trade-up interest as consumers become more educated about aged rum's complexity relative to other brown spirits. Limited distribution to four states signals a controlled rollout aimed at high-volume spirits markets with established on-premise rum culture — a pattern consistent with how Diageo has historically introduced prestige expressions before broadening availability.

This release also reflects a wider industry pattern of spirits brands using terroir-driven maturation — locally sourced botanicals, region-specific cask treatments — to differentiate limited runs in an increasingly crowded ultra-premium set.
