Event Brings Together Athletes, Media, and Culinary Talent for Cause WNBA legends are convening July 23 at avec River North in Chicago for "Full Court Press: Legends," a series of events timed to the 30th Annual WNBA All-Star Weekend. The day unites athletes, media leaders, cultural voices, and fans to celebrate women's basketball while raising awareness and funding for the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The programming spans three distinct sessions. "Voices of the Game," an exclusive luncheon and expert panel moderated by Syd Scott, features ESPN's Ari Chambers, Netflix's Elle Duncan, NBC Sports' LaChina Robinson, and content creator Coach Jackie discussing career trajectories and opportunities for the next generation of sports journalists. The afternoon includes "Legends Lounge," a live taping of the Good Game with Sarah Spain podcast, featuring WNBA icons Ticha Penicheiro and Sheryl Swoopes sharing stories about the league's legacy and evolution. A historical moment occurs when Hall of Famer Ticha Penicheiro presents the inaugural "Next Up" Award to NCAA standout Hannah Hidalgo, who recently broke several of Penicheiro's longstanding collegiate records.
Evening Culinary Experience The day concludes with "Culinary Tip-Off," an exclusive evening experience hosted by Penicheiro featuring cuisine from Chef Stephanie Izard, Chef Dylan Patel, and Chef Tracey Shepos Cenami. The event includes wines from Shafer Vineyards, Lingua Franca, and Jackson Family Wines, along with spirits from KAPA Napa Valley Vodka, Wilde Irish Gin, High West Whiskey, and Casa Noble Tequila. Proceeds benefit the V Foundation's Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund, which supports innovative research addressing cancers that disproportionately affect certain populations. "This event is a powerful example of what can happen when the sports community comes together with purpose," said V Foundation for Cancer Research CEO Brandi Williams Broome. "The energy and influence throughout the WNBA community provides an incredible opportunity to shine a light on the urgent need for cancer research funding while honoring the legacy of Stuart Scott. Every conversation, every connection and every dollar raised helps advance groundbreaking research that is saving lives and bringing us closer to Victory Over Cancer®." Syd Scott, moderator of the day's opening panel, added: "It's meaningful to my family to see the WNBA community rally behind the V Foundation for Cancer Research and the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund. It's simple. They're choosing to do good where it is needed. I admire that tremendously. Shows that when strife in our world arises, we arise to meet it in kind. That lesson, which I've learned from so many athletes and journalists, is what we'll be spreading during this event. Cancer is our antagonist, and this storytelling saves lives." Ticha Penicheiro commented, "As someone who had the privilege of playing in the WNBA and witnessing its growth firsthand, celebrating the league's 30th Anniversary is a reminder of how far women's basketball has come and of the pioneers who helped build the foundation for today's athletes. It's an opportunity to honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire the next generation of women in sports."
Why It Matters
For F&B operators and hospitality professionals, this event underscores how premium culinary experiences can serve dual purposes—driving brand visibility while supporting meaningful causes. The convergence of Michelin-recognized talent (Izard won Top Chef and earned James Beard recognition), luxury beverage partners, and high-profile talent creates a model for cause-driven experiential dining that resonates with affluent, socially conscious consumers.
