A new American whiskey label is hitting shelves and direct-to-consumer channels this fall as Wilder Heart rolls out two bottlings aimed at a spirits market where, as the brand's own VP of Sales puts it, drinkers "are more knowledgeable and ready to try something new than ever."
The launch covers Wilder Heart Whiskey (SRP $44.99, 94 proof / 47% ABV) and Wilder Heart Cask Strength (SRP $69.99, 117.5 proof / 58.75% ABV, Batch 1). Both are built from a blend of three distinct mash bills — corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley — aged a minimum of four years and bottled with nothing added beyond limestone-filtered water and yeast. The brand was co-founded by Nate Woodruff, host of the Whisky with a View podcast, and VCL North America, the U.S. arm of UK-based spirits business VCL Vintners, which brings established expertise in cask management, maturation, and independent bottling.
The Two Expressions
The 94-proof flagship opens with stone fruit aromatics — fresh peach and apricot — layered with brown sugar, cinnamon, and orange peel on the nose. Red apple, citrus, and soft vanilla carry the palate, with the finish delivering crisp apple and lemon peel. The Cask Strength skews richer and darker: honey, cherry, and blackberry on the nose give way to baked apple, brown sugar, and butterscotch, with a long finish of dark fruit, clove, sweet oak, and vanilla. Despite its elevated proof, the brand describes it as softer on the palate than expected, with spice and toasted oak emerging as it rests.
Distribution and On-Premise Implications
For beverage directors and retailers tracking new American whiskey arrivals, Wilder Heart's entry-level price point — $44.99 — sits squarely in the high-traffic sweet spot for whiskey-by-the-glass programs, while the $69.99 Cask Strength has the profile and proof to anchor a premium pour or tasting flight. The brand launches direct-to-consumer with shipping available to more than 40 states, and retail placement is currently live in Colorado, Missouri, and Wyoming. Pre-orders are open now via its website.
Doug Ward, VP of Sales and Strategy, who oversees the brand's commercial direction, framed the competitive pitch plainly: "Wilder Heart is strong on both fronts; there's a lot to discover about the brand and the whiskey. We set out to create something with real character that brings fresh energy to American whiskey."
Community as Brand Infrastructure
Beyond the liquid, Wilder Heart is building a membership layer called Basecamp — a free community where members earn Trail Points through brand participation, including a signature "Sunset Pour" ritual, and redeem them for gear, experiences, and rewards. The mechanic mirrors loyalty-program thinking that has gained traction across the beverage industry, repurposing it as an outdoor-lifestyle wrapper rather than a points-for-discounts model.
The brand has also baked a conservation commitment into its identity from day one, including fire safety education, conservation programming, and partnerships with local trail, river, and forest stewardship groups. Bottle design reflects the same outdoor ethos, with mountain, river, and tree detailing embedded in the packaging. That kind of values-forward positioning is increasingly relevant to on-premise buyers and restaurant beverage programs seeking brands with a coherent story — especially in craft and independent dining segments where provenance and purpose resonate with guests.
For operators considering the brand for fall and winter menus, the Cask Strength's dark-fruit and baking-spice profile makes it a natural candidate for seasonal whiskey cocktails, while the flagship's lighter stone-fruit notes lend themselves to approachable highballs or whiskey-forward digestif offerings.
