Wendy's is tapping the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise to drive Kids' Meal traffic this summer, launching a limited-time collectible card promotion at participating U.S. locations starting July 20 and running through early September. The promotion marks the 35th anniversary of the iconic SEGA character and follows an earlier rollout in the UK.

The Collectible Mechanic

Each Kids' Meal comes with one of seven character card cases, and each case contains five trading cards drawn from a pool of 35 total. The card sets feature characters spanning the Sonic universe — Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy Rose, Miles "Tails" Prower, Silver the Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Rouge the Bat. The repeat-visit mechanic is deliberate: collecting all 35 cards requires multiple purchases, giving operators a built-in driver for return trips during a typically competitive summer promotional window.

The Kids' Meal itself includes a choice of two-piece chicken tenders, four-piece chicken nuggets, a hamburger, or a cheeseburger, paired with Jr. Hot & Crispy Fries or apple bites and a kids' drink. Guests can order in-restaurant or through the Wendy's app and Wendys.com, while supplies last.

IP Partnerships as Traffic Tools

For QSR operators, entertainment IP tie-ins have become a reliable lever for driving incremental family visits, particularly during the summer months when kids are out of school and dining-out frequency rises. Wendy's — which operates more than 7,000 restaurants worldwide — is using the Sonic partnership to compete for that family occasion against rival Kids' Meal programs across the fast-food segment.

The UK launch earlier in 2026 gave Wendy's a proof-of-concept before bringing the promotion stateside, a sequencing strategy that reflects growing sophistication in how chains test and scale limited-time offers across markets. For franchisees, collectible promotions also tend to generate organic social sharing as guests post their hauls — an earned-media benefit that extends beyond the paid campaign.

For operators tracking how limited-time offers and licensing deals are reshaping the QSR competitive landscape, the Wendy's-SEGA collaboration offers a current case study in leveraging entertainment anniversaries as promotional hooks. Broader beverage and kids' menu innovation continue to be areas where chains differentiate the family dining occasion at the counter level.
