Watergate Hotel Leverages Historic Break-In for Guest Engagement

The Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. will host "Unlock Your Secret Message" on June 17, marking the 54th anniversary of the break-in that defined American political history and the hotel's legacy.

The activation runs from 4 to 6 p.m. in the hotel lobby, featuring a newsroom-inspired installation with vintage typewriters, rotary phones, and 1970s-era decor. A poet will invite guests to select a word from Watergate history—"secret," "investigate," "tapes," or "scandal"—and compose an original poem on the spot. Each poem will be sealed in a "Top Secret" envelope and given as a keepsake.

The hotel's Kingbird restaurant will offer a specialty cocktail called The Smoking Gun, described as a Scotch-forward, high-proof smoked bourbon drink with spicy bitters and citrus garnish.

Hotel's Historical Positioning

Daniel Pimentel, Managing Director at The Watergate Hotel, framed the activation's purpose: "Those who operated out of this building spent two years trying to keep words off the record. This activation invites guests to become part of that conversation through creativity, self-expression, and storytelling."

The event is one of several references embedded in the hotel's branding. The property's phone number encodes the break-in date, and room keys read "No Need to Break In."

The 336-room luxury hotel, owned by Euro Capital Properties, features dining venues including Kingbird restaurant, The Next Whisky Bar, and Top of the Gate rooftop bar, along with Argentta Spa and an indoor pool.
