Vallarta Supermarkets](https://www.vallartasupermarkets.com) is expanding its Southern California footprint with a new 45,839-square-foot store in Duarte — its 66th location — opening October 21 at 1470 Mountain Ave. The family-owned Latin grocery chain, which operates across California and Arizona with more than 9,000 team members, will mark the occasion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, live entertainment, and giveaways for the first 300 customers.
The Duarte opening also signals the debut of SushiOro, Vallarta's new in-store sushi concept developed by the chain's in-house culinary team. The program launches with six signature sauces — ranging from sweet and zesty to bold and spicy — that can be paired with core Vallarta rolls or purchased separately. The move reflects a broader supermarket foodservice trend in which grocery operators are layering restaurant-quality prepared food programs into the store experience to drive traffic and differentiate against both conventional supermarkets and fast-casual competitors.
Community Investment
Beyond its retail footprint, Vallarta is directing $10,000 in donations to five local schools and charitable organizations in Duarte — a community-investment model the chain has applied consistently at new-store openings. The location will also generate 200 jobs spanning department staff and store leadership roles.
"With every new store, our goal is to create a welcoming destination where families can find fresh, high-quality ingredients that reflect the cultures and traditions they love," said Allie Garcia, Vice President of Marketing at Vallarta Supermarkets. "We look forward to building lasting connections with Duarte residents and local organizations."
What's Inside
The full-service format covers a wide range of specialty departments that underpin Vallarta's positioning as an authentic Latin shopping destination. These include a Carnicería — branded as the Home of the Original Carne Asada™ — fresh-made tortillas, a Panadería with hand-decorated cakes and pan dulce, and a Pescadería with in-house ceviche and aguachile preparation. La Cocina offers hot ready-to-eat meals inspired by Mexico and Central America, while the store's Juice Bar serves aguas frescas from traditional vitroleros and made-to-order guacamole stations round out the grab-and-go appeal.
The Duarte store also participates in Vallarta's omnichannel grocery delivery network, available through DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Instacart — a capability increasingly important to grocery and foodservice operators competing for convenience-driven shoppers. Founded in 1985, Vallarta now operates 66-plus stores, and the Duarte opening suggests the chain's deliberate expansion pace through high-density Southern California markets will continue.
