Three-quarters of global travelers now say sustainability influences their booking decisions, yet cost, inconvenience, and a lack of clear information still prevent many from acting on that intent — a gap that Trip.com Group is moving to close with a new in-app feature called My Travel Impact.
The tool, launching inside the Trip.com app, consolidates a traveler's environmentally conscious choices across hotels, flights, and rail into a single dashboard. For hospitality operators, the feature signals a notable shift: third-party sustainability certification is becoming a booking filter, not just a marketing badge.
What the Data Shows
Trip.com Group's 2026 Sustainable Travel Consumer Report, drawn from 8,777 respondents across 29 markets, found that 56.8% of travelers intentionally choose more sustainable options. Environmental responsibility (52.5%) and preserving destinations for future generations (50.8%) are the leading motivators. Yet higher prices remain the top barrier at 37.1%, followed by inconvenience (29.8%) and difficulty identifying credible sustainable options (27.1%).
The findings carry direct implications for hotel operators competing on sustainability and hospitality trends. Nearly two-thirds of respondents (64.2%) said that more sustainable travel offerings would influence their choice of booking platform, and 41.6% ranked clear sustainable labels as the feature they most want from online travel agencies. That preference is a meaningful signal for properties weighing the cost of third-party eco-certification.
How My Travel Impact Works
The dashboard pulls from three sources. For hotels, it logs nights spent at properties carrying Trip.com's Certified Sustainable label, which is tied to recognized third-party certification bodies including GSTC. For flights, it displays estimated emissions avoided from lower-emission options, calculated using the Travel Impact Model recommended by Travalyst. Rail travel rounds out the picture with estimated savings versus gasoline car journeys.
By aggregating data that was previously scattered across separate booking confirmations, the feature makes a traveler's cumulative impact visible — addressing the 32.7% of survey respondents who said they specifically wanted a carbon-impact dashboard.
Younger Guests Drive the Urgency
The generational divide in the data is sharp and strategically important for hotel and foodservice operators targeting younger demographics. Nearly seven in ten Gen Z travelers (69.5%) said they intentionally chose more sustainable options, compared with 63.0% of Millennials, 50.6% of Gen X, and 40.6% of Boomers. More than three-quarters of Gen Z respondents (76.7%) said sustainable offerings would influence which OTA they book through.
Extreme weather is also reshaping itineraries: 62.0% of travelers adjusted at least one aspect of a trip due to extreme weather events, with 29.9% delaying or rescheduling and 21.9% switching destinations entirely. For resort and destination properties, that volatility underscores the operational case for resilience planning alongside sustainability investment.
CEO Jane Sun framed the launch as an industry-wide obligation: "Making travel a positive force for the world it connects is a shared responsibility, and the travel industry has a vital role to play in preserving the places, nature and communities that make travel meaningful for generations to come."
For lodging operators, the practical takeaway is that sustainability credentialing is increasingly a distribution and restaurant and hospitality marketing lever — properties with recognized certifications now appear inside a booking tool that 64.2% of surveyed travelers say will shape where they book.
