America's original cave-aged blue cheese brand, Treasure Cave, has secured distribution at Tops Friendly Markets, placing six products across the retailer's dairy and deli sections just ahead of the National Buffalo Wing Festival. The move marks a deliberate push into the Northeast for a brand with deep Midwestern roots.
The Tops lineup includes 5-ounce blue cheese crumbles, 5-ounce naturally smoked blue cheese crumbles, and a naturally smoked blue cheese wedge in the dairy aisle, alongside original, caramelized onion, and hot honey blue cheese dips and spreads in the deli. Tops operates 152 grocery stores across New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont, making this a meaningful footprint expansion for the Wisconsin-made brand. A limited-edition 5-ounce crumbled blue cheese in Buffalo Bills packaging is also set to hit Tops deli sections in November — a targeted play at football season merchandising.
Festival Activation
Treasure Cave is joining the National Buffalo Wing Festival on August 29–30 as the event's Official Crumbly Blue Cheese, with Tops serving as the festival's official grocer. To drive trial ahead of the event, Tops is running a buy-one, get-one-free promotion on all Treasure Cave blue cheese dips and spreads from August 22–27. At the festival, the brand will operate a booth offering a specialty blue cheese mac and cheese developed by local restaurant Ilio DiPaolo's, with proceeds directed to the Response to Love Food Pantry. Six participating restaurants will also feature Treasure Cave in specialty menu items throughout the event.
"Blue cheese and buffalo wings have always gone hand in hand, so expanding our presence at Tops and participating in the National Buffalo Wing Festival are meaningful milestones," said Samina Kirchen, Treasure Cave brand manager. The brand is also staging an Influencer Wing Sauce-Off during the festival, challenging content creators to build a signature wing sauce using Treasure Cave crumbly blue cheese, with the winning recipe earning branded merchandise.
Retail and Foodservice Implications
For buyers and foodservice operators tracking specialty cheese placement, Treasure Cave's Tops deal illustrates how branded cheese producers are pairing retail distribution gains with event marketing to accelerate trial in competitive regional markets. The Buffalo Bills co-branding planned for November reinforces a growing pattern in the dairy category: limited-edition sports tie-ins timed to football season can sharpen shelf visibility and justify seasonal incremental placement.
Treasure Cave, founded in 1935 and originally produced in caves in Faribault, Minnesota, today manufactures its blue and gorgonzola cheeses in Almena, Wisconsin. Operators and retail buyers interested in regional specialty cheese trends and beverage and food pairing strategies will want to watch how the brand's Northeast expansion performs heading into the fall entertaining season.
