A speculative-fiction magazine dedicated to the future of farming and soil health has earned national recognition for cultural innovation. Tractor Beam, the quarterly literary publication incubated by Tractor Beverage Company, received an Honorable Mention in the General Excellence category of Fast Company's 2026 World Changing Ideas Awards and is also listed among the program's Community & Society honorees. The recognition was presented this week at the 2026 Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York City.
The Publication's Mission
Launched in 2025, Tractor Beam identifies its editorial focus as "soilpunk" — a genre that trades dystopian narratives for optimistic, regeneration-rooted visions of Earth's agricultural future. Through original fiction, artwork, and annotated expert commentary, the magazine explores farming, food systems, soil health, climate, and community. Since launch, it has published more than 50 original works by award-winning and emerging writers and artists worldwide. Guest editors have included authors Jeff VanderMeer, Leah Thomas, and Fatimah Asghar, among others.
Co-founders and editors Lana Z Porter and Claire Gustavson shaped the publication around a specific cultural gap. "People don't lack information; they lack hope," Porter said. "Soilpunk treats soil not as a backdrop, but as the foundation of a thriving planet and a place from which entirely new worlds can grow." Gustavson added that the goal is to bring creative dreamers and practitioners of regenerative agriculture into the same conversation.
Why Foodservice Operators Should Pay Attention
For foodservice professionals, Tractor Beam represents an increasingly visible side of the organic beverage brand's identity. Tractor Beverage Company — farmer-founded and employee-owned — built its commercial footprint on USDA Certified Organic ingredients and a commitment to soil health, and the magazine extends that positioning into cultural storytelling. Duke Stump, Chief Brand and Product Officer at Tractor Beverage Company, framed the project in terms operators may recognize from their own sustainability messaging: "Farmers make a daily investment in a future they may never see. That act of optimism is at the heart of Tractor Beam."
As consumer interest in regenerative agriculture and transparent supply chains continues to influence menu and sourcing decisions, brands that can credibly connect their supply chain commitments to broader cultural narratives are gaining differentiation. Tractor Beverage's approach — funding an editorially independent publication rather than a branded content channel — is an unconventional but increasingly discussed model in the beverage industry.
The Fast Company honor arrives as Tractor Beam prepares to release its new "Hell or High" water issue, timed to a live event — Clams Casino: A Soilpunk Variety Show — on September 22 at Honey's in Brooklyn, hosted by Porter and Gustavson.
