Prepared meal delivery service Tempo is rolling out a dedicated Protein Max tier to its weekly menu, featuring single-serving, two-minute meals that deliver at least 40 grams of protein per portion — a step up from its existing protein-packed line, which clears 30 grams per serving. Prices start at $16.48 per meal.

The launch is a direct response to subscriber data. "When we ask customers what meal types they want to see more of, protein-packed is the number one response by far," said Andrew Isabel, VP of new product development at Tempo. The brand plans to rotate six or more Protein Max options each week, spanning proteins like grilled chicken, braised beef, and pulled pork. Current menu entries include a Braised Beef Tomato Ragù Cavatappi, Hibachi Teriyaki Chicken Thighs, and a Smoky Chipotle Beef Burrito Bowl — formats that borrow comfort-food cues while hitting high-protein targets.

The Market Context

The timing aligns with documented consumer trends in the food and beverage sector. According to Circana's 2026 research, protein ranks as the second most sought-after ingredient among U.S. consumers, trailing only vegetables. For foodservice and meal-kit operators, that data point increasingly shapes both menu architecture and marketing positioning — and Tempo is explicitly leaning into it alongside wellness filters like GLP-1 Smart, Calorie and Carb-Conscious, Fiber-Rich, and Anti-Inflammatory.

Nigel Palmer, executive R&D chef at Tempo, noted the culinary intent behind the formulations: "Many of these meals are inspired by classic comfort foods that folks may not associate with high-protein or high-fiber eating — but we always aim to create meals that taste just as delicious as a home-cooked recipe." Each Protein Max dish also incorporates fiber-rich ingredients — fresh vegetables, legumes, and scratch-made sauces — positioning the line as a balanced nutrition play rather than a single-macro focus.

Breakfast Expansion

Separate from the Protein Max launch, Tempo recently added freshly made breakfast options to its delivery rotation, including a Greek-Style Breakfast Scramble with spinach and roasted potatoes and a Classic Protein Pancake Breakfast with sausage and scrambled eggs. Both breakfast SKUs deliver 20 or more grams of protein per serving. The breakfast addition broadens Tempo's daypart coverage and gives the brand — launched in 2023 by the team at Home Chef, part of The Kroger Co. family of companies — a fuller competitive footprint in the direct-to-consumer prepared meals space.

For operators and retailers tracking consumer demand shifts in the ready-to-heat meal segment, Tempo's move underscores how high-protein positioning has migrated from supplement culture into mainstream meal delivery. Brands that can credibly combine clinical-leaning nutrition claims with chef-driven flavors are finding growing subscriber bases — a dynamic worth watching across restaurant and hospitality food program development as the lines between foodservice and direct-to-consumer continue to blur. Tempo's full dietitian-approved menu of more than 30 meals is available at TempoMeals.com. Food & Beverage Magazine has been tracking the broader protein trend across retail and foodservice channels throughout 2026.
