The Release

Stranahan's American Single Malt Whiskey is extending its Mountain Angel family upward with its oldest expression to date: a 14-year-old finished in rare Hungarian Tokaji wine casks, available starting October 2026 at a suggested retail price of $129.99 per 750 ml bottle. The addition joins the existing Mountain Angel 10-Year-Old and 12-Year-Old, giving on-premise and retail buyers a complete trio of extended-aged American single malts from the Denver distillery.

The Cask Journey

The production process behind the 14-Year-Old is notably complex, unfolding in three phases. After a decade in new charred American white oak barrels, the whiskey rests an additional three years and three months in Cognac casks before a final nine-month finish in Tokaji wine casks — the same style of sweet wine barrels long associated with Hungary's most celebrated dessert wines. The spirit is made from 100% malted barley and cut with Eldorado Spring water from the Colorado Rocky Mountains, then bottled at 94.6 proof (47.3% ABV). Tasting notes include candied apricot, orange marmalade, baked apple, vanilla, caramel, tobacco, and pepper, with a velvety mouthfeel and a finish of tropical notes, rich chocolate, and drying oak spice.

High-altitude aging at Denver's mile-above-sea-level elevation accelerates evaporation — what distillers call the angel's share — concentrating flavor in the remaining liquid. Head Blender Justin Aden noted that the Tokaji casks "beautifully complement Stranahan's naturally fruity character, adding a richness to the mouthfeel that balances the oak spice developed over 14 total years of aging."

Operator Implications

For beverage directors and spirits buyers, the Mountain Angel 14-Year-Old represents a meaningful on-premise opportunity in the fast-growing American single malt segment. The category has attracted significant attention from whiskey drinkers seeking domestic alternatives to Scotch, and a well-aged, multi-cask American single malt at this price tier is still relatively rare shelf inventory. According to Stranahan's, the brand holds the number-one position in the American single malt category based on Nielsen data through April 2026, and has accumulated the most awards in the segment over 2020–2025.

Initial availability will be limited to Stranahan's Distillery in Denver, Stranahan's Whiskey Lodge in Aspen — which opened in 2024 — and select retailers across Colorado, California, Texas, and Florida. A national rollout is planned for the months following launch, making it worth flagging for spirits programs outside those initial markets. Operators looking to build depth in their American whiskey by-the-glass or bottle programs should track the broader beverage industry trends driving aged domestic spirits into premium on-premise menus.

The Mountain Angel 14-Year-Old also stands as evidence of the distillery's two-decade-plus investment in cellar inventory — a competitive advantage that newer entrants to the American single malt category cannot easily replicate. For hospitality buyers, that provenance story translates directly into table-side narrative value.
