The Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization (SIEDO) is leading a delegation of business and government leaders to SIAL Paris 2026 this week, positioning the Magic Valley region as a global food production hub capable of attracting European capital and export partnerships. The mission targets food manufacturers, distributors, and investors at one of the world's largest food and beverage trade shows, which is expected to draw roughly 8,000 exhibitors and 295,000 industry professionals across its October 17–21 run.
The Magic Valley's Scale
The numbers behind Southern Idaho's pitch are substantial. Agribusiness accounts for 48% of the region's economic output, and more than 42% of regional jobs are tied directly or indirectly to the industry. The Magic Valley processes approximately 80% of Idaho's milk and produces roughly 70% of the food-size trout sold in the United States. Its anchor tenants read like a who's who of food manufacturing: Chobani operates what it calls the world's largest yogurt processing plant in Twin Falls; Glanbia Nutritionals runs major cheese production facilities; Riverence operates the world's largest commercial freshwater rainbow trout farm; and Lamb Weston and McCain Foods anchor potato processing. Agri Beef's Snake River Farms brand adds premium beef to the portfolio.
"Southern Idaho has built an extraordinary food ecosystem, combining the agricultural resources, manufacturing expertise and innovation that companies need to compete globally," said Jason Barnes, Executive Director of SIEDO. "Our visit to Paris is about creating opportunities in both directions: helping our producers reach new international markets while introducing European companies to the advantages of investing and doing business in Southern Idaho."
Dinner Diplomacy in Paris
SIEDO is backing its trade pitch with a targeted dinner on October 20 at the residence of the Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Paris. The "All Things Food. One Shared Table" event is designed to let European executives taste the region's output firsthand. The menu spans white sturgeon caviar from Idaho Springs Foods, rainbow trout from Riverence, Snake River Farms filet mignon paired with Idaho French fries, cheeses from Glanbia and Ballard Cheese, and a Chobani huckleberry parfait — accompanied by wines from Idaho's Snake River Valley producers Bitner and Huston Vineyards.
State Senator Kelly Anthon, traveling with the contingent, framed the mission as relationship-building with long-term commercial intent. "Our strong network of growers, producers, researchers and business partners helps us deliver exceptional products to customers around the world," he said. "SIAL Paris is an opportunity to strengthen those international relationships and introduce more companies to what Southern Idaho has to offer."
Research Infrastructure as a Selling Point
Beyond its existing industry footprint, Southern Idaho is also pitching its research pipeline to prospective partners. The University of Idaho's developing Idaho Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (CAFE) is positioned as evidence that the region's food innovation capacity is expanding — a detail likely to resonate with European food-tech investors evaluating North American entry points.
For operators and supply-chain professionals tracking where the next wave of U.S. food production investment may land, the Magic Valley's combination of established processing scale, raw material diversity, and emerging research infrastructure makes it a region worth watching. Coverage of similar regional food-economy pushes and agricultural supply chain trends has increasingly moved to the center of trade reporting, as domestic sourcing and export diversification become strategic priorities across foodservice.
