The Specialty Food Association named 75 Gold Award finalists and three Outstanding Packaging Design finalists for its 2027 sofi™ Awards, selected through a blind judging process scored by a panel of professional retail buyers. Winners across 25 product categories will be revealed at a dedicated ceremony during Winter FancyFaire* on January 17, 2027, in San Francisco.

What Judges Evaluated

Now in its sixth decade — the program launched in 1972 — the sofi Awards evaluated more than 1,000 total applications this year. Judges scored each entry on flavor, appearance, texture, aroma, ingredient quality, and innovation. The result is a curated shortlist that functions as a forward-looking trend map for buyers, distributors, and foodservice operators navigating the $219-billion specialty food industry.

The 25 finalist categories read as a cross-section of where specialty food is heading: regenerative organic proteins (Niman Ranch's Grass-Fed Beef, Big Picture Foods' Olive Oil), functional and adaptogenic beverages (Roots in Harmony's Mushroom Chocolate Mint Tea, Ocean Root's Golden Milk Powder Mix), globally inspired condiments and ferments (Moromi Black Twice Brewed Soy Sauce, Kimchi Works), and premium charcuterie (Brooklyn Cured's Dirty Martini Salami, Fra' Mani's Spicy Capicollo). Plant-based alternatives earned their own category, with Clementine's Ice Cream and Plant Ahead among the finalists.

Opportunity for Buyers

"These products all received top marks from our expert panel of buyers and offer a unique preview of the trends that will lead the industry in 2027," said Leana Salamah, SVP of Marketing and Communications at SFA. Beyond competitive prestige, the sofi program provides each brand with direct product feedback from industry evaluators — a practical tool for refinement ahead of retail or foodservice placement conversations.

At Winter FancyFaire*, all 75 finalists will be featured in a dedicated product showcase designed to create structured discovery and sourcing opportunities for qualified trade attendees. The January 17 ceremony will also reveal five Grand Honors Awards: Product of the Year – Food; Product of the Year – Beverage; Outstanding New Product; Timeless Taste; and Outstanding Packaging Design — the last of which drew finalists from Bifrost Butters, forchewn, and Wildwood.

For operators and retail buyers tracking emerging specialty brands, the sofi finalist list is historically a reliable early signal of products that gain significant distribution in the following 12 to 18 months. Categories like functional beverages and premium condiments and sauces have seen consistent crossover from specialty retail into foodservice menus in recent years, making the list worth close attention well before the San Francisco show.

Registration for Winter FancyFaire* is open to qualified members of the specialty food trade, industry affiliates, and media at winterfancyfaire.com.
