Portland Ice Cream Brand Plants Flag in Boston Salt & Straw, the Portland-based artisan ice cream brand, is opening its debut Boston location on Friday, July 24 at Commonwealth Pier in the Seaport District (200 Seaport Blvd.). The scoop shop launches with a menu designed specifically for the city, featuring three exclusive offerings alongside the brand's signature rotating and classic flavors.
Boston-Exclusive Flavors The opening menu leads with Boston Cream Pie—vanilla chiffon cake ice cream with dark chocolate fudge swirl and vanilla bean custard. A second exclusive, Pistachio & Ricotta Cannoli, pairs pistachio ice cream with ricotta ribbons, cannoli shell pieces, and candied nuts as a nod to Boston's Italian American community. The return of the Cool Dog, a limited-edition creation featuring rum-spiked Double Fold Vanilla ice cream, crème anglaise, dark chocolate fudge, and coffee whipped cream in a vanilla cake bun, marks a celebratory nod to the brand's inventive dessert approach.
Opening Weekend Promotions Salt & Straw is anchoring the debut with a three-day activation.
On opening day, guests in line receive complimentary coffee from Daily Provisions, and the first 100 visitors get gift cards. Saturday includes free kids scoops with any ice cream purchase, face painting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and complimentary coloring pages. Sunday's "Make It A Double" happy hour (4–6 p.m.) offers buy-one, get-one scoops.
Permanent Menu Mix The Boston shop will stock Salt & Straw's year-round favorites—Chocolate Gooey Brownie, Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, and Strawberry & Coconut Water Sherbet—alongside a monthly rotating series. August will launch the Summer Pies Series, an annual program of pie-inspired "a la mode" flavors. The shop also carries viral products including The Tacolate (a Taco Bell collaboration) and The Cake, an ice cream cake built on the brand's Birthday Cake & Blackberries flavor.
Community-First Approach Co-founders Kim and Tyler Malek emphasized the alignment between Salt & Straw's values and Boston's character. "Boston has been a city we've admired for its incredible food culture, rich history, and deep sense of community," says CEO and co-founder Kim Malek. "There's an authenticity here that feels incredibly aligned with who we are as a company." Tyler Malek added: "Boston is a city with so many iconic flavors and traditions, but it also champions innovation. That's exactly what inspires us. We love diving into a city's culinary history while discovering the people who are shaping what's next." The brand plans to announce local collaborations in the coming months. The Boston location is positioned at the intersection of the Seaport's historic waterfront and its emergence as a dining and cultural destination.
Why It Matters
Salt & Straw's Boston entry marks a significant East Coast expansion for a brand with a track record of tying limited-edition and collaborative flavors to local food traditions and sourced ingredients—a model that builds customer loyalty and drives foot traffic in competitive scoop-shop markets. Operators in other markets should watch for similar hyperlocal menu strategies and opening-weekend community activation playbooks that prioritize early buzz and word-of-mouth.
