Two new certified gluten-free products from Rudi's Bakery are hitting major retail shelves this fall, targeting a gluten-free consumer base that has long struggled to find convenient, nutritious options without sacrificing taste or texture.

The first launch, Rudi's Gluten Free Sandos, is positioned as the first nationally available pre-made, gluten-free crustless peanut butter and fruit spread pocket sandwich. Made with Justin's Classic Peanut Butter and real fruit spread — formulated with more fruit and less sugar than standard jam or jelly, and free of high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavors or colors — the sandwiches come in Peanut Butter & Grape and Peanut Butter & Strawberry varieties. Sold in 4-count cartons from the freezer aisle, Sandos are now available at Whole Foods Market, Kroger, and Thrive Market.

The Protein Play

Running parallel is the Rudi's Gluten Free Daily Power Protein Bread, available in White and Sourdough in 18-ounce loaves. Each serving delivers 10 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber — two nutrients that CEO Jane Miller identifies as chronically underrepresented in gluten-free bread. "Gluten-free consumers have always had to compromise on taste and nutrition with bread," Miller said. "We're delivering products that help consumers enjoy more possibilities without compromise." Daily Power is currently available at Sprouts Farmers Market, with Kroger distribution slated for November.

Why Retail Buyers Should Take Note

For foodservice buyers, category managers, and specialty grocery operators tracking the gluten-free food and beverage segment, these launches reflect a meaningful shift in product sophistication. Approximately 3.1 million Americans follow a gluten-free diet, according to data cited by Rudi's, and the brand is betting that convenience and nutritional density — not just allergen compliance — are now the primary purchase drivers in this category.

The Sandos launch, in particular, signals an emerging co-branding opportunity in the frozen and specialty food space. Pairing Rudi's gluten-free bread platform with Justin's, a well-established better-for-you nut butter brand, adds shelf credibility and cross-merchandising potential that category buyers may want to monitor as the format matures.

Founded in Boulder, Colorado, in 1976, Rudi's has spent five decades building its organic and gluten-free portfolio across formats including English muffins, Texas Toast, sourdough loaves, and buns. The dual launch represents the brand's most aggressive product extension in recent years and demonstrates how legacy bakery brands are repositioning to capture both the health-conscious and allergen-aware shopper in a single SKU. Industry observers following better-for-you product innovation in hospitality and retail will recognize this as part of a broader trend toward functional nutrition claims in the bread aisle — a category that has historically lagged behind snacks and beverages in protein fortification.
