From Loss to Legacy Amy Valukas didn't set out to open a bakery.

After the unexpected death of her husband, John, she found herself searching for a way to rebuild. What emerged was Busias XOXO, a downtown Racine destination that has become far more than a place to buy desserts. "This business was born from heartbreak," Valukas said. "After unexpectedly losing my husband, my entire world changed overnight. Instead of giving up, I poured my heart into creating a place where people could gather, celebrate, remember, and heal."

What Busias XOXO Offers The bakery specializes in handcrafted Polish baked goods, custom sugar cookies, and gourmet desserts, alongside immersive workshops designed to bring people together. The operation now houses more than 27 local artisans and features weekly themed bakery menus, cookie decorating classes, and recipes passed down through Valukas's family. A significant part of the operation's identity comes from her daughter, Ally, whose cookie artistry has become central to the bakery's offerings. "One of the greatest joys has been building this business alongside my daughter, whose incredible cookie artistry has become a cornerstone of what we do," Valukas said.

Community and Mission The bakery's weekly rotating desserts and experiences encourage patrons to slow down and connect.

Valukas emphasizes that the mission extends beyond the kitchen: "Create beautiful food, preserve family traditions, support local makers, and give people a place where they feel seen, welcomed, and at home." "Food is about so much more than what is on the plate—it's about love, legacy, resilience, and community," she added.
