The Scope of Work
Cunard will send its flagship Queen Mary 2 into dry dock at Damen Shiprepair Brest in France on March 31, 2027, returning the ship to service on May 9, 2027. The six-week refit is one of the most comprehensive in the vessel's history, touching accommodations, food-and-beverage venues, wellness facilities, retail, and entertainment spaces across the ship.
For hospitality operators watching luxury travel, the investment signals renewed momentum in the upper tier of ocean travel — a segment where dining quality and suite exclusivity remain the primary drivers of guest choice and repeat booking.
Dining and Wellness Upgrades
The Queens Grill and Princess Grill restaurants — the twin pillars of Cunard's onboard fine-dining and hospitality experience — will both be refreshed, with the brand emphasizing that the sense of space, comfort, and exclusivity that defines the Grill tier will be preserved. Sixteen new Cunard Princess Grill Suites will join the inventory, alongside 15 new Britannia-category staterooms, bringing 31 net-new staterooms to the ship. Every existing Grill Suite will receive updated interiors, new furnishings, and spa-inspired bathrooms.
Mareel Wellness & Beauty will be fully transformed, repositioned as a destination designed, in Cunard's framing, to revive, refresh, and restore. A new collection of luxury retail boutiques will also be introduced, expanding the ship's onboard commercial offering alongside the dining and wellness upgrades.
Experience Investment Rationale
"Queen Mary 2 is more than a ship, she is an icon of modern luxury travel and the only true ocean liner in the world," said Katie McAlister, President of Cunard. "This is a significant investment in Queen Mary 2, and every decision has been approached with deep respect for her heritage, her character and the sense of occasion that only Queen Mary 2 can offer. We are not reinventing what guests love about her; we are refining it beautifully and ensuring she carries it forward."
The design vision is led by Chris Finch, one of Queen Mary 2's original designers, drawing on the cinematic glamour of classic Hollywood balanced with British heritage. That design continuity matters commercially: the Transatlantic Crossing market is built on brand loyalty, and operators in adjacent luxury hospitality segments will recognize the logic of preserving a signature aesthetic while updating the physical product.
The refit also includes a major digital upgrade to Illuminations, the largest planetarium at sea, enhanced kennels with increased capacity and a refurbished owners' lounge, and additional outdoor deck space. New Grill Suites and staterooms went on sale May 18, 2026, for voyages departing from May 2027, suggesting strong pre-sale demand drove the timeline forward. Queen Mary 2 operates regularly scheduled Transatlantic Crossings between Southampton and New York, as well as itineraries in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Canada, and the Caribbean.
