Potandon Produce, the exclusive marketer of Green Giant Fresh potatoes and onions, has officially launched Sprout Cares, a community initiative developed alongside food technology company RäFoods to advance nutrition education, childhood literacy, and community well-being across North America.

The program, funded through the companies' Living Nutrition Fund, will partner with nonprofits, schools, and community organizations in the regions where Potandon grows, markets, and sells its fresh produce. For foodservice and retail operators already sourcing from Potandon's supply network, the initiative signals a broader brand commitment that extends from farm to community—a factor increasingly relevant to buyers navigating supplier values alongside price and availability.

Early Programs

The initiative's first confirmed partnership is with Read Ahead, a New York City nonprofit that supports elementary school students through reading-based mentoring. John Rota, Chief Marketing Officer of Potandon Produce and RäFoods, confirmed additional programs are in development in Idaho, where Potandon maintains a significant operational footprint, as well as in other communities connected to the companies' retail and distribution relationships.

"Our goal is to champion the importance of Living Nutrition and literacy," said Des Hague, CEO of Potandon Produce and RäFoods. "We believe our responsibility is to nourish and educate our youth while providing healthy food options that support HealthSpan and vitality for all."

Produce Industry Context

The launch comes as fresh produce suppliers face growing pressure from retail and foodservice partners to demonstrate community impact alongside supply chain reliability. Initiatives that connect brand equity to measurable community outcomes are becoming a more common feature of supplier-retailer conversations, particularly in the fresh and functional food categories where RäFoods also competes with its Wild About Sprouts line, grown using patented COLD-GROWN® technology.

Sprout Cares is structured to engage employees, growers, retail partners, and nonprofits—making it a potential touchpoint for operators and buyers who participate in community health programs through their own procurement or corporate social responsibility efforts in foodservice. For distributors and category managers tracking the fresh potato and onion segment, the initiative represents Potandon's effort to deepen brand relevance beyond the produce aisle.

As covered in beverage and food industry analysis from our network, supplier-led community programs are increasingly influencing long-term partnership decisions at the retailer and operator level. Potandon and RäFoods appear to be positioning Sprout Cares as a durable platform rather than a one-off campaign, with the companies stating they will continue identifying organizations where support can have a "meaningful and lasting impact."
