A new brand film from P.F. Chang's is doing more than pulling at heartstrings — it's arriving as evidence mounts that the casual dining chain's pivot away from promotion-led marketing is paying off in measurable business results. The chain says it climbed from 22nd to 3rd in same-store sales growth within its casual dining competitive set in less than one year.

The two-minute spot, set to Lukas Graham's "7 Years," traces a guest's life from childhood birthday dinners to passing P.F. Chang's traditions — Chang's Lettuce Wraps, the Great Wall of Chocolate's signature sparkler — on to the next generation. The film was produced and edited by Mark Skala of Skalawag Productions in partnership with the brand's internal marketing team, and will run across connected TV, digital streaming, and social media.

The Strategy Behind It

The campaign reflects a deliberate shift in positioning since Holly Smith was named Chief Marketing Officer in January. Rather than leading with discounts or limited-time offers, Smith's team has leaned into brand narrative — centering the guest experience, culinary innovation, and the emotional weight of dining occasions. "This film is our way of honoring that history and inviting those guests back to the table, this time with their own families, to keep the tradition going," Smith said.

For operators and marketers tracking casual dining brand strategy, the results offer a useful case study. Promotional messaging has long dominated the casual dining segment as chains competed on value. P.F. Chang's is now betting that experience-led storytelling can be a more durable traffic driver — particularly as dine-in occasions become more deliberate and occasion-driven for consumers.

Experiential Investment Lifts Traffic

The brand is backing that thesis with product as well as advertising. This summer, P.F. Chang's launched a theatrical Sushi Boat service, and the chain says dine-in same-restaurant traffic moved from +1% before the launch to +9.2% after — a data point that underscores the appetite for shareable, in-restaurant experiences that go beyond the plate.

That trend aligns with broader patterns across full-service restaurant dining, where operators are increasingly investing in tableside presentations, theatrical service elements, and signature moments designed to generate social sharing and repeat visits. P.F. Chang's multigenerational framing adds another layer: the chain operates over 300 restaurants across 23 countries, and its 30-plus-year history gives it a genuine nostalgia asset that younger fast-casual competitors cannot replicate.

The campaign launches ahead of the holiday season, a high-stakes period for casual dining when group occasions, family gatherings, and celebration dining spike.
