Nobu Hospitality will develop a full resort complex at Monte Rei, the award-winning golf estate in Portugal's Eastern Algarve, with a 100-room hotel, a signature Nobu restaurant, private villas, and branded residences scheduled to welcome guests in 2029. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, making this the brand's second Portuguese property and the latest addition to its expanding European footprint.

The project is being led by Norfin, a Portuguese real estate asset manager, as the centrepiece of a wider investment programme that will ultimately include a beach club and additional leisure amenities. The residential component spans 21,000 square meters of Nobu-branded villas and residences, positioning the development as a year-round lifestyle destination rather than a conventional seasonal hotel play—a format that has gained traction across the luxury hospitality sector.

The Culinary Anchor

For foodservice and hospitality operators watching Nobu's growth, the signature restaurant remains the commercial and brand engine of each new property. Nobu's genre-defining Japanese-Peruvian cuisine—built on decades of flagship restaurant operations globally—functions as a draw that extends well beyond hotel guests to local residents and resort members. Placing that restaurant within a golf-and-residential community in the Eastern Algarve, a region historically underserved by international fine-dining brands, gives the outlet a captive audience and a meaningful competitive advantage in the market.

Trevor Horwell, CEO of Nobu Hospitality, framed the location's appeal around its combination of assets. "Monte Rei offers a rare combination of natural beauty, privacy and an established reputation for exceptional golf and residential living," he said. "Together with Norfin, we have the opportunity to create a distinctive Nobu destination that feels deeply connected to the Eastern Algarve while delivering the hospitality, dining, design and service for which the brand is known around the world."

Design and Development Team

The architectural and interior vision will be shaped by DSA Architects alongside the Rockwell Group, the New York-based design studio that has been a long-standing Nobu partner across multiple properties worldwide. Their brief is to bring Nobu's restrained design language into dialogue with Monte Rei's landscape and the wider character of the Eastern Algarve—a mandate consistent with how the brand has approached resort environments in other international markets.

Miguel Mateus, CEO of Norfin, described the partnership as central to the resort's next chapter. "It introduces one of the world's most recognised luxury hospitality brands to the Eastern Algarve, with a Nobu Hotel, signature Nobu Restaurant and branded residences that will further strengthen Monte Rei's international appeal," he said.

The Monte Rei announcement reflects a broader pattern in luxury restaurant and hotel development: brands with strong culinary identities are increasingly anchoring mixed-use resort communities where the restaurant operates as both a revenue center and a marketing asset. With the Algarve continuing to attract high-net-worth international visitors and residential buyers, the 2029 opening will place Nobu in direct competition with established European luxury resort operators for that audience.
