A 134-room luxury hotel set to open inside Rockefeller Center in fall 2027 now has a design identity: Aspen Hospitality has named Rockwell Group and Pierre & Co. as the firms shaping The Nell New York, which will be both the first hotel within the landmark complex and New York City's only Relais & Châteaux property.

The Design Split

Rockwell Group leads public-facing spaces — arrival, reception, a seventh-floor dining room and bar, a wine lounge and cellar, spa, fitness center, and meeting venues — while Pierre & Co. handles the guestrooms and suites. Both firms drew from Rockefeller Center's Art Deco architecture as a common point of departure, translating its geometric language into warm woods, stone, bronze, and plaster rather than literal period recreation. "We never wanted The Nell New York to feel like a hotel that could be anywhere," said Julie Frank, Vice President of Design at Aspen Hospitality. "Its Art Deco architecture became our point of departure. The goal was not to recreate its history, but to interpret the era in a way that would feel current, residential, and distinctly Nell."

For the public spaces, Rockwell Group conceived the hotel as a Manhattan townhouse unfolding across a sequence of connected rooms. The ground-floor entry — designed to read like a residential New York entrance, with a limestone façade and backlit drapery — gives way to custom elevators that deliver guests to the seventh floor. There, a bar wrapped in fluted amber stone, marble, and textured glass portals overlooks the Rockefeller Center ice rink, while a private wine lounge and cellar extend the wine culture that has defined The Little Nell in Aspen. "The experience unfolds gradually, from the discreet residential entrance on 48th Street to the lounges, dining spaces, wine cellar, and spa," said Shawn Sullivan, Partner at Rockwell Group. "The result feels layered and collected over time, like the quintessential New York residence."

Rooms and Suites

Pierre & Co. filtered Art Deco influence through a contemporary, restrained lens for the guestrooms, pairing warm neutral palettes and clean architectural lines with softened curves and layered materials. A persimmon accent color — drawn from the curtains of Radio City Music Hall — threads through the rooms for depth without visual noise. The Presidential Suite amplifies the formula with deeper burgundy tones, rich stone selections, and curved marble bathroom walls. "We wanted every element to feel considered and purposeful, but never over-designed," said Pierre Josselin, founder of Pierre & Co. "Spaces where everything has its place, and where the details gradually reveal themselves throughout your stay."

Operator Implications

The Nell New York marks the brand's first property outside of Aspen and signals a deliberate expansion strategy for Aspen Hospitality under the Nell Hotels banner. For hospitality operators and food-and-beverage directors watching the luxury segment, the hotel's programming emphasis — a wine cellar rooted in a resort wine culture, an all-day dining room designed to draw both guests and locals, a seventh-floor bar with one of the city's most recognizable views — points to continued investment in destination F&B as a primary driver of hotel identity. The approach mirrors broader beverage program trends in luxury hospitality, where curated wine and cocktail experiences are increasingly central to a property's competitive positioning. The Nell New York is slated to open in fall 2027 at 10 Rockefeller Plaza.
