Meijer opened a 75,000-square-foot grocery-format store in Livonia, Mich., on Aug. 19, 2026, its fifth Meijer Grocery location in the Midwest and fourth in Michigan. The store at 33500 Seven Mile Road follows a Rochester Hills opening earlier this year, signaling a deliberate Midwest expansion of the retailer's smaller, food-focused banner.

The Format Strategy

At less than half the footprint of a Meijer supercenter, the Livonia store is built around grocery essentials: produce, daily-cut fresh meat, a full-service deli, an in-store bakery with cake decorators, pharmacy, and floral. A dedicated "Local Favorites" endcap stocks Southeast Michigan staples including Faygo Soda, Better Made Snacks, Grandpapa's Snacks, and Downriver Chips — a shelf-placement approach that reflects broader grocery retail trends toward regional product curation. Private-label offerings include the premium Frederik's by Meijer line and True Goodness, the retailer's clean-ingredient brand formulated without more than 100 specific ingredients.

Digital Tools at the Shelf Edge

The Livonia store integrates several digital shopping solutions that will interest foodservice and retail operators watching frictionless checkout development. Shop & Scan lets customers use a mobile app to scan and bag items as they shop, bypassing traditional checkout lanes. The Flashfood app provides deep discounts on surplus food, directly addressing food waste at the store level — a pressure point across grocery and restaurant supply chain operations. An expanded staging area supports Meijer Home Delivery and Pickup, and the mPerks loyalty program extends rewards across in-store and digital transactions.

Community Investment at Opening

Store Director Sharron Griffin led a ribbon-cutting and presented $15,000 in donations split between two local organizations: Anastasia & Katie's Coffee Shop, which provides employment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and Breaking Barriers Food Pantry, which addresses food insecurity across Livonia. The Livonia store's first pantry partner, Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, will receive donations through the retailer's fall Simply Give campaign running through Sept. 26. Meijer's Simply Give hunger relief program has generated more than $100 million for Midwest food pantry partners since 2008, and the company donates at least 6 percent of its net profit to community organizations annually.

Accessibility features at the new location include height-adjustable changing tables in family restrooms and free in-store access to Aira, an app-based navigation service for blind and low-vision shoppers. Two sculpture gardens designed by Michigan artists Erik and Israel Nordin of the Detroit Design Center flank the exterior, framing the store as a community gathering point beyond its retail function.

"Supporting the communities we serve is one of our highest priorities, and that commitment starts well before a new store opens its doors," said Rick Keyes, President & CEO of Meijer.
