McDonald's USA is stepping into the energy drink category for the first time, rolling out the Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer at participating restaurants beginning August 17. The launch marks a meaningful expansion of the chain's evolving beverage strategy, which has leaned heavily on crafted sodas and Refreshers over the past year.
The new drink combines Red Bull's base with blue raspberry syrup and freeze-dried dragonfruit inclusions. Guests who prefer a lower-sugar option can substitute Red Bull Zero as the base. Separately, participating locations will also carry an 8.4 oz can of Red Bull for customers who want the original product straight.
The Operator Opportunity
The energy drink segment represents one of the fastest-growing categories in both retail and foodservice, and McDonald's entry signals that QSR operators can no longer treat it as a specialty-channel exclusive. For franchisees — who own approximately 95 percent of the chain's roughly 13,500 U.S. locations — the addition of a customizable, premium-priced energy beverage creates a clear upsell opportunity alongside the existing crafted drink lineup.
Alyssa Buetikofer, Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer at McDonald's USA, pointed to consumer demand as the driver. "We've seen growing enthusiasm for our crafted sodas and refreshers as fans look for more variety and options to fit every occasion," she said, noting that the Red Bull Dragonberry Energizer had already generated strong results during U.S. testing before the national rollout.
Broader Beverage Push
The energy drink debut arrives alongside a wider menu of new and expanded drink options. The Vanilla Swirl — a crafted soda pairing smooth vanilla flavor with Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, or Coke Zero Sugar, finished with cold foam — directly answers consumer demand for elevated versions of familiar fountain staples. McDonald's is also adding reduced-sugar crafted sodas built on Diet Dr Pepper, Dr Pepper Zero Sugar, and Sprite Zero Sugar, available where applicable, as well as the previously introduced Orange Dream with Fanta.
Taken together, the wave of additions positions McDonald's beverage program as a more direct competitor to specialty beverage chains and convenience-store drink destinations — categories that have drawn younger consumers willing to pay a premium for customization. Industry observers covering restaurant beverage innovation have noted that operators who build compelling drink menus can drive incremental visit frequency without major kitchen investment.
All Refreshers and Red Bull Energizers served at McDonald's contain caffeine, per the chain's disclosure. Availability of specific items varies by participating restaurant.
