Christina Ruggiero stepped into the role of Regional President, Mars Pet Nutrition North America on July 1, tasked with accelerating growth across one of the segment's most recognizable brand stables — including PEDIGREE, IAMS, SHEBA, CESAR, GREENIES, TEMPTATIONS, and NUTRO.

Ruggiero joins from The Coca-Cola Company, where she most recently served as President of the Global Nutrition Category, overseeing a $9 billion portfolio that included Minute Maid, Simply, fairlife, and Innocent — delivering what Mars describes as one of Coca-Cola's fastest-growing businesses during her tenure. Her background spans procurement, operations, and supply chain leadership at Diageo, as well as nearly four years running Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages in India, where she doubled the company's net worth and expanded its retail footprint significantly.

The Market Opportunity

The timing of the hire reflects deepening consumer investment in pet wellness — a trend with direct implications for food and beverage suppliers, foodservice operators, and retailers who stock or source pet nutrition products. Nearly two-thirds of Americans are now pet parents, according to a NielsenIQ Pet-O-Graphics Survey from Q2 2025, and more than four in five pet parents view nutrition as the single most important contributor to their pet's health, per Petfood Industry data from April 2025. That demand is pushing category growth toward science-backed formulations targeting hydration, gut health, dental health, and healthy aging — product pillars that mirror trends already reshaping human food and beverage industry analysis.

Innovation and Retail Partnerships

In her new role, Ruggiero will work directly with retailers, suppliers, and strategic partners to strengthen distribution and accelerate product innovation. Mars is positioning the division around omnichannel expansion and digital acceleration — a strategic posture familiar to operators tracking parallel shifts in restaurant and foodservice retail channels. The company frames the North America unit as one of Mars Petcare's largest, underscoring the commercial weight the appointment carries within the $65 billion-plus Mars portfolio.

"Throughout my career, I've been drawn to businesses with category-defining brands, strong purpose and opportunities to create meaningful impact," Ruggiero said. "Mars Pet Nutrition combines world-class science, culturally fluent brands and a deep understanding of the role pets play in people's lives."

Ruggiero holds a Master's degree in Management from the University of Huddersfield and a Bachelor of Science from Marymount College. She has been recognized for inclusive leadership, earning honors including "Best CEO Leading on Gender Diversity & Inclusion" from House of Rose Professional. Before her civilian career, she served as a cryptologist in the U.S. Navy supporting the National Security Agency — a background that speaks to the operational discipline she brings to a complex, multi-brand business.
