A Rare Intersection of Whisky and Fine Art
The Macallan has released the Romantica Collection, a 1986 vintage single malt drawn from a European oak sherry-seasoned cask and bottled in February 2026 after nearly four decades of maturation.
The release marks a symbolic moment in Macallan's history: while the legendary 1926 vintage was being pulled from the cask and bottled, this new whisky was just beginning its own maturation journey in 1986.
Artist Collaboration Drives Limited Release
The brand commissioned Sir Peter Blake, Valerio Adami, and Michael Dillon to design individual labels for the collection. Each artist's work explores themes of time and nature.
The Romantica Collection is limited to 258 signed bottles globally, with 86 bottles available from each of the three artists. Every bottle is housed in a handcrafted European oak box and accompanied by a unique, limited-edition giclée art print.
The whisky itself was distilled in October 1986 and has matured for 39 years and four months.
Why It Matters
For luxury spirits operators and collectors, the Macallan Romantica Collection represents the convergence of provenance, artistic merit, and scarcity—three factors that command premium positioning and drive collector demand in the ultra-premium whisky segment.
