The Laughing Cow's month-long brand campaign has wrapped with a live comedy event at Chicago's The Second City and a Times Square video activation, marking the conclusion of Bel Brands USA's #SpreadTheLaugh initiative — a consumer-engagement push built around the premise that the iconic cheese mascot had lost her laugh.

The campaign invited consumers to share their own trivial everyday disagreements — "wedge issues" ranging from whether to make the bed daily to whether dishes need to soak — and use humor to resolve them. The effort sparked participation across nearly 20 countries, including Canada, India, and Vietnam, demonstrating the kind of cross-border social reach that CPG brands in the snack and dairy category increasingly pursue to drive brand affinity beyond traditional advertising.

The Second City Finale

The campaign's closing event centered on a live performance at The Second City, the legendary Chicago comedy institution, hosted by comedian and Saturday Night Live cast member Jeremy Culhane. The Second City's improvisers performed alongside Culhane, framing the show around airing their own absurd "wedge issues" as a device to reunite the mascot with her signature laugh. The performance was streamed across social media, extending the live moment to a global audience.

"Making a cow laugh? That's a career first," Culhane said ahead of the show. "She's been laughing for over 100 years, so clearly she has high standards."

Peter McGuinness, CEO of Bel North America, credited the campaign's breadth to consumers' willingness to lean into the humor. "When we invited people to share their 'wedge issues' to help The Laughing Cow get her laugh back, we never imagined just how far it would spread," McGuinness said. "She's laughing again, and we hope it keeps spreading."

Times Square Through Nov. 1

To close the campaign, a large-format video of The Laughing Cow mascot appeared on a corner display at 7th Avenue and 47th Street in Times Square beginning October 23, running through Sunday, November 1. The mascot also made an in-person appearance at the location. Out-of-home placements in high-traffic urban corridors remain a staple tactic for food and beverage brands seeking to convert cultural moment campaigns into mass-market visibility.

For foodservice and retail operators stocking Bel's portfolio — which includes Babybel, GoGo squeeZ, and Boursin alongside The Laughing Cow — the campaign is a useful indicator of how the company is investing in brand equity for its flagship snacking line. Campaigns that generate genuine consumer participation across multiple markets tend to translate into sustained shelf velocity, a dynamic that branded snack marketing coverage has tracked closely as CPG companies compete for mindshare in the crowded better-snacking segment.

Bel Group, the 160-year-old family-owned parent company, operates in more than 120 countries and positions its portfolio around single-serve portion snacking in dairy, fruit, and vegetable categories, as well as plant-based cheese alternatives.
