La Rocca Creative Cakes is marking its 40th anniversary this month, a milestone that traces the brand's arc from a single family operation in Woodbridge, Ontario, to a premium dessert supplier now reaching consumers through more than 5,000 partners across North America and international markets.
Founded in 1986 by Lina, Harvey, Marty, and Michael of the La Rocca family, the company drew directly on the family's pastry heritage — the original La Rocca bakery was established in Naples, Italy, in the 1950s. Four decades later, the brand's core products — including the Truffle Royale, Lemon Mousse, Brownie Chocolate Cheesecake, and Tiramisu — remain central to its portfolio, with many desserts still hand-finished at its Canadian production facilities.
North American Reach
For operators sourcing premium plated and grab-and-go dessert options, La Rocca's scale carries practical weight. The company manufactures in Canada using domestic eggs, flour, and cream complemented by internationally sourced ingredients, and maintains what it describes as a scratch-made approach built on pastry team expertise. That production model — quality-controlled, Canadian-made, yet capable of reaching thousands of partners — positions La Rocca squarely in the growing premium dessert segment that foodservice buyers are increasingly prioritizing.
"For 40 years, we've had the privilege of being part of people's celebrations," said Michael Givens, President of La Rocca Creative Cakes. "Tradition, Emotion & Passion aren't simply the words we live by. Tradition is what was passed down from one generation to the next. Passion is what our people bring to their craft every day. And emotion is what happens when one of our cakes becomes part of a moment people remember."
Sammontana Italia Context
The anniversary arrives at a consequential moment in La Rocca's corporate journey. The brand joined Sammontana Italia in 2025, becoming part of a Group that also includes Bindi Dessert and Sammontana Gelati all'Italiana — both founded in Italy in 1946 and themselves marking an 80-year heritage this year. Sammontana Italia operates more than 2,400 employees across six Italian production sites and three international facilities in the United States, Canada, and France, and serves the HoReCa and modern retail channels.
The Group has achieved B Corp certification, and is extending that sustainability and responsibility framework across its full portfolio, including La Rocca. For the hospitality and foodservice supply chain, the Sammontana umbrella adds industrial scale and international logistics infrastructure to what remains a brand built on artisan positioning.
Givens framed the anniversary as both a backward glance and a forward signal. "Forty years gives you an opportunity to look back, but it also makes you think about what comes next," he said. "We're proud of where we came from, proud of the people who helped build La Rocca, and excited about where our passion for great desserts will take us next." The company says it will continue developing new desserts while preserving the foundational recipes and techniques that have defined the brand across four decades.
