New Orleans Cocktail Destination to Host World-Class Bar Takeovers Jewel of the South, the James Beard Award-winning New Orleans tavern, is launching The Cocktail Hour this October—an ambitious residency program that will invite some of the world's most celebrated cocktail bars to temporarily relocate their operations to a dedicated venue in the French Quarter. Running from mid-October 2026 through mid-June 2027, the program will unfold across five seasonal chapters aligned with New Orleans' cultural calendar: Samhain (October), the holidays, Carnival, festival season, and summer. Inaugural residents include The Dead Rabbit (New York City), Panda & Sons (Edinburgh), and Brujas (Mexico City). Additional confirmed participants are Bar Leone (currently ranked No. 1 on World's 50 Best Bars) in Hong Kong and Sip & Guzzle (currently ranked No. 1 on North America's Best Bars) in New York City. Unlike traditional guest bartender shifts, The Cocktail Hour offers multi-day immersive experiences where each visiting bar transforms the venue into an authentic extension of its own identity. Guests will access signature cocktails, curated food pairings, music, and storytelling rooted in each bar's culture and hospitality philosophy. "New Orleans has always been a city where people come together through food, drink, fellowship and storytelling. With The Cocktail Hour, we're creating a platform for the world's best bars to become part of the fabric of that tradition. New Orleans holds a uniquely prominent position in the history of refined cocktails, and there is no better location to connect with the best craft cocktail practitioners in the world and showcase their talents for our guests," said Chris Hannah, co-founder, partner and beverage director of Jewel of the South.
Leadership and Vision The program is created by Jewel of the South founders John Stubbs and Chris Hannah—who recently won the 50 Best Bars Roku Industry Icon Award 2026—alongside Deke Dunne, an award-winning bartender and former Beverage and Creative Director at Allegory in Washington, D.C. Dunne will oversee creative execution and production across all residencies. "Every great bar has its own personality, and that extends far beyond what's in the glass. It's the hospitality, the music, the design, the rituals and the people that make each place memorable. The Cocktail Hour gives us the opportunity to celebrate those elements by giving every participating bar the freedom to create an experience that feels true to who they are, all within one of the world's great hospitality cities," said Dunne. Dunne is also developing his own bar concept slated to open in Washington, D.C., in 2027.
Why It Matters
For operators and industry professionals, The Cocktail Hour signals a shift in how established bars approach national and international exposure—moving beyond fleeting collaborations to sustained, immersive pop-up residencies that blur the line between guest programming and destination hospitality. The model tests whether world-class bar concepts can be temporarily transplanted and remain authentic, while simultaneously positioning New Orleans as a hotbed for cocktail tourism and cross-cultural hospitality exchange.
