Hospitality Group announced today the opening of Sergeant Ma, a new waterfront restaurant debuting in early September at China Basin in San Francisco. The restaurant, designed by architect Cass Calder Smith, overlooks Mission Creek directly across from Oracle Park. Executive Chef and Partner Jason Halverson conceived Sergeant Ma as a tribute to his mother, a Vietnamese immigrant who settled in Wichita, Kansas, and taught herself to cook through television, cookbooks, and handwritten recipes. "Though I've worked in some incredible kitchens and learned from remarkable chefs throughout my career, my mom remains my greatest culinary influence," Halverson said. "She taught me that food is about taking care of people. Sergeant Ma honors the values she instilled in me while reflecting my own journey as a chef in California and the incredible diversity of San Francisco."
Menu and Design The menu will draw inspiration from Asian flavors, techniques, and traditions while celebrating Northern California's seasonal ingredients and coastal bounty. Rather than focusing on any single regional cuisine, the restaurant will embody contemporary California dining through the lens of Halverson's personal story and heritage. The one-of-a-kind waterfront location features expansive indoor and outdoor dining spaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, private dining accommodations, lounge seating, waterfront fire pits, and sweeping views of Mission Creek.
Companion Cafe Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group will also operate Waters Edge, a daytime café and community workspace in an adjacent space serving coffee, breakfast, and casual lunch fare. "As we continue to invest in San Francisco, we believe restaurants should tell authentic stories and create meaningful places for people to gather," said Ryan Cole, Co-Founder and Partner of Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group. "Sergeant Ma represents both a deeply personal concept for our team and an exciting addition to one of the city's fastest-growing neighborhoods." The announcement follows the group's February unveiling of plans for the waterfront destination. Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group operates six full-service restaurants in the Bay Area, including The Vault Steakhouse, Trestle, MAMA Oakland, and 7 Adams. The group's partners are Cole, Tai Ricci, Halverson, and Lucas Bierbower.
Why It Matters For Bay Area operators, Sergeant Ma signals continued investment in San Francisco's waterfront dining scene and the growing appeal of chef-driven, narrative-focused concepts that blend cultural heritage with contemporary California cuisine—a positioning that increasingly resonates with high-end diners seeking authenticity over trend.
