Heineken USA and OpenTable have launched a first-of-its-kind integration that lets diners designate a driver directly within the restaurant reservation process — a move that injects responsible-consumption planning into one of the most routine moments in a night out. The pilot, rooted in Heineken USA's "There's No Such Thing As Fine to Drive" platform, launches July 31 at ten participating Houston restaurants and runs through October 4, 2026.
The Survey Case
The partnership is backed by a nationally representative survey of 1,000 Americans aged 21 and older, fielded April 2–12, 2026. The findings underscore a clear gap between intent and action: 71% of respondents said they would be more likely to plan a safe ride home if prompted at the time of booking, yet 57% say designating a driver is not something they typically think about when making restaurant or venue reservations. An additional 82% said they enjoy their night out more when a safe ride plan is already in place. For restaurateurs, that data points to a tangible opportunity — embedding the conversation earlier in the guest journey, before anyone arrives at the table.
Houston-specific results were more sobering. Thirty-four percent of Houston respondents said they had previously underestimated how intoxicated they were until already behind the wheel, and 36% admitted driving after drinking because they were the "most sober" person in the group. Those figures help explain why HEINEKEN USA chose Houston — a sprawling, car-dependent metro — as the pilot market.
How Restaurants Participate
Diners book through a dedicated Heineken–OpenTable landing page and assign a designated driver at the time of reservation. Once the booking is confirmed, the DD becomes eligible for perks: a $25 gift card toward Heineken® 0.0 for the evening, and upon completion of a post-experience survey, a $100 voucher from SafeRides.org, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has facilitated more than 300,000 safe rides since 2003. The program is structured as a sweepstakes for Texas residents 21 and older.
The ten participating Houston venues span multiple concepts and price points — from the four Federal American Grill locations and two Goode Company Seafood outposts to Morton's Houston Downtown, Morton's Houston Galleria, Good and Co. Kitchen & Cantina, and Truluck's Ocean's Finest Seafood & Crab. That breadth signals an effort to test the concept across casual and upscale dining, a useful data set if Heineken USA decides to scale nationally.
"By elevating the DD experience, we want to raise awareness that opting out of alcohol doesn't mean opting out of the fun," said Anne de Graaf, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at HEINEKEN USA. Reece Jones, General Manager of OpenTable Media, framed the integration as an extension of the platform's core purpose: connecting diners and restaurants in ways that are meaningfully differentiated.
Why Operators Should Watch
For restaurant operators, the program creates a low-friction upsell moment for non-alcoholic beverage options — a category that has grown rapidly across both on- and off-premise channels. Survey data from Heineken USA found that 49% of Americans say drinking non-alcoholic beer helps them feel included in social moments when they are not consuming alcohol, while 64% said they would volunteer to be the DD more often if restaurants offered to cover their non-alcoholic drinks.
That last figure is particularly relevant for restaurant beverage program strategy: covering a table's NA drinks in exchange for a committed designated driver could reduce liability exposure, increase table satisfaction scores, and build loyalty — all without significant cost to the operator in this pilot, since Heineken USA is absorbing the tab. Whether the brand continues to subsidize the perk beyond the Houston pilot remains to be seen, but the mechanic itself — designating a DD at booking — costs operators nothing to support and could become a competitive differentiator as NA beer continues to gain traction on beverage menus.
