Heartland Food Products Group, the Carmel, Indiana-based manufacturer behind Splenda, SlimFast, and Java House, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the Americas business of Whole Earth Brands — a move that would consolidate some of the most recognizable sugar-substitute names in foodservice under one roof. The deal covers the Equal, Whole Earth, Swerve, and Chuker brands across North America and Latin America. Financial terms were not disclosed.
For restaurant and hospitality operators, the acquisition signals a meaningful shift in vendor dynamics. Buyers who currently source from multiple sweetener suppliers may soon find that Heartland controls a broad spectrum of their tabletop and back-of-house options — from the ubiquitous blue Equal packets to the baking-friendly Swerve erythritol blend increasingly popular in low-sugar pastry and beverage programs. Consolidation at this scale typically gives the acquiring company greater leverage on distribution and pricing, which can cut both ways for operators negotiating volume contracts.
The timing reflects sustained consumer demand for reduced-sugar and zero-calorie alternatives across dining occasions. Beverage programs in particular have become a proving ground for alternative sweeteners, as specialty coffee, tea, and cocktail menus lean harder into health-forward customization. Brands like Swerve have already found footing in culinary applications beyond the tabletop, appearing in dessert and baked-goods formulations where operators want a closer-to-sugar texture without the caloric load.
Heartland's existing footprint — anchored by Splenda's dominant market presence — gives it immediate cross-selling infrastructure to push the newly acquired brands into foodservice channels. Industry observers tracking restaurant supply-chain consolidation will note that owning competing sweetener brands simultaneously allows Heartland to address virtually every consumer preference segment: sucralose, aspartame, stevia-based blends, and erythritol, all from one supplier relationship.
The transaction is subject to standard closing conditions. Food & Beverage Magazine will continue to track the deal's progress as it moves toward completion.
