A 50/50 marriage of two decorated mash bills is the story behind Hard Truth Distilling Co.'s newest limited release: Master Distiller's Reserve Dark Roast Rye, a bottled-in-bond whiskey set to debut September 26 at the distillery's Harvest Festival in Nashville, Indiana, with a suggested retail price of $59.99.
The Blend
The expression pairs the Chocolate Malt Rye (RW-3) and Caramel Malt Rye (RW-4) mash bills that Hard Truth first released in 2022 and that quickly earned competition medals and a loyal following among consumers who prefer dark, bold rye expressions. Both mash bills share the same backbone — 51% rye, 38% corn — differentiated by an 11% roasted malt component that is either chocolate-malted or caramel-malted barley. The 25-barrel batch is bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV) and meets the full bottled-in-bond standard: a single distilling season, one distillery, a minimum of four years' aging, and federal supervision.
"By combining our award-winning Caramel Malt Rye and Chocolate Malt Rye, the caramel malted barley and chocolate malted barley truly become the star ingredients that elevate Dark Roast Rye," said Hard Truth Barrel Manager Chris Moore. Master Distiller Bryan Smith positions the whiskey as equally at home in a cocktail program as it is in a neat pour, noting its complexity of butterscotch, Swiss chocolate, vanilla custard, rye spice, and a finish that moves from fudge brownie and brûléed sugar into peach nectar and black pepper.
Events for On-Premise Buyers
For bar operators and buyers looking to evaluate the release ahead of the Harvest Festival, Hard Truth is staging two ticketed preview events. A Cask & Still Social at the distillery in Nashville, Indiana on August 21 will feature small plates, cocktail pairings, distiller introductions, and live jazz from Louisville's Bourbon & Brass Quintet. A second Whiskey Social moves to the Garage at Bottleworks in Indianapolis on August 28, mirroring the format with tasting stations and grazing tables. Limited bottles will be available for purchase at both events — a practical opportunity for on-premise buyers to assess the whiskey before it hits wider distribution.
The roasted-malt rye category remains a niche but growing segment of the American whiskey landscape, with craft distillers borrowing grain-processing techniques from the craft beer world to add roast-driven flavor layers without relying solely on barrel char. Hard Truth began that exploration internally in 2018, and the resulting pipeline of specialty expressions has become a meaningful part of its identity in beverage industry analysis. The distillery, founded in 2015 in Brown County, Indiana, now distributes products across more than 20 states and sells online in more than 40.
The Dark Roast Rye release continues a productive awards cycle for the brand. In 2025, three Hard Truth expressions earned Gold Medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, while the Double Oaked Sweet Mash Single Barrel Rye captured a Double Gold. That competition pedigree, combined with the bottled-in-bond designation, gives on-premise buyers a credible story to build cocktail menu narratives around — a detail that matters as restaurant beverage programs look for differentiated, story-rich spirits to justify premium price points.
