Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City will host the Out of the Darkness Walk for the seventh consecutive year on Sunday, September 20, 2026, cementing the property's role as the anchor of what has grown into New Jersey's largest AFSP community fundraising event. Since the walk's inception in 2018, the Atlantic-Cape event has surpassed $1 million in total contributions to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
Industry-Wide Commitment
For the third consecutive year, the Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) is bringing employees from every Atlantic City casino property into the fold. Combined with Hard Rock's individual efforts, the broader Atlantic City casino industry has raised more than $1.2 million for AFSP since the walk began in 2019. The cross-property participation reflects an increasingly coordinated approach to community health investment among hospitality operators — a model that hospitality industry peers have taken note of as employee wellness and mental health awareness climb higher on HR agendas.
"The Atlantic City casino industry is proud to stand together in support of a cause that affects so many families in our community — and beyond," said George Goldhoff, President of the Casino Association of New Jersey and President of Hard Rock Atlantic City. "Our member properties are committed to giving back to the communities they serve, and participating in the Out of the Darkness Walk is one meaningful way we come together to support mental health awareness, inspire hope, and help save lives."
What It Means for Operators
For hospitality and foodservice operators, Hard Rock Atlantic City's sustained, multi-year commitment to AFSP illustrates how large venue properties can build durable community partnerships that extend well beyond a single fundraising cycle. Michael Sampson, General Manager at Hard Rock Atlantic City and an AFSP NJ Chapter Board Member, has led efforts that now function as a regional industry coalition rather than a standalone property initiative. Embedding leadership in nonprofit governance — as Sampson has done by joining the AFSP NJ Chapter board — is a strategy gaining traction among hotel and casino general managers seeking to deepen local stakeholder relationships.
The event also highlights how mental health and wellness programming in the restaurant and hospitality sector is moving from a back-of-house conversation to a public-facing brand value. As workforce retention pressures persist across the industry, operators who visibly champion employee and community mental health may see downstream benefits in culture and recruitment.
Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention funds scientific research, advocates for public policy, and supports survivors of suicide loss. Community members, businesses, and organizations can register, form a team, or donate at afspwalks.donordrive.com/AtlanticCape ahead of the September 20 event.
