The world's largest bubble tea chain is turning 20 with a series of limited-time activations designed to drive traffic and reward loyal guests throughout September. Gong cha, which was founded in Taiwan in 2006 and now operates nearly 2,200 locations across 32 international markets, is anchoring its anniversary campaign around a free merchandise drop and a consumer sweepstakes tied to shared birth-year storytelling.
The Sept. 15 Bottle Drop
On September 15, any guest who purchases the limited-time Birthday Drink at a participating U.S. location will receive a complimentary Birthday Boba Bottle, while supplies last. The Birthday Drink — a layered Strawberry Milk Tea topped with mango foam and sprinkles — runs only from September 6 through September 15, creating a tight promotional window that operators will want to staff and stock for accordingly. Guests who miss the free giveaway window can still purchase the Birthday Boba Bottle for $4.99 with any purchase, while supplies last. Gong cha has confirmed it produced the bottle in limited quantities and will not restock after the anniversary window closes, adding genuine scarcity to the offer.
Store Takeover Sweepstakes
The brand is also running a sweepstakes targeting consumers who turn 20 in 2026 — effectively those who share a birth year with the chain. Three winners will each take over their nearest Gong cha location with up to 20 guests, receiving free drinks for the entire group, birthday merchandise, and complimentary Gong cha for one year. Entry closed ahead of a September 14 announcement on Instagram. The sweepstakes format — pairing a brand milestone with a guest life milestone — is a growing tactic in the beverage industry's loyalty and engagement strategies, allowing brands to generate authentic user content while filling seats during what can otherwise be a routine mid-week period.
"We are thrilled to share our 20th birthday celebration with our guests and make the festivities extra special with giveaways and offers that will delight fans," said Jenn Leitner, Vice President, Brand & Marketing, The Americas for Gong cha. "From our exclusive Birthday Drink to the new Birthday Boba Bottle to parties celebrating our birthday twins, we have a lot of fun in store for this major milestone."
The anniversary campaign fits into a broader trend of beverage-forward quick-service restaurant operators using LTO merchandise and exclusive collectibles to build brand equity beyond the cup. Earlier in the anniversary year, Gong cha released purple and green tumblers and an exclusive boba charm — physical touchpoints that extend the brand relationship between visits and encourage repeat traffic. With nearly 2,200 global locations and a customizable menu model that appeals to both bubble tea veterans and newcomers, Gong cha's operational simplicity continues to support rapid franchise expansion. The September activations are available at participating U.S. locations; operators can direct guests to the Gong cha mobile app, which supports mobile ordering, beverage customization, and loyalty point accrual.
