Flowers Foods, one of the largest packaged bakery producers in the United States with $5.3 billion in 2025 sales, is adding two veteran financial executives to its board of directors. Flowers Foods elected Shaun P. Mara and Ken Plunk as independent directors, effective November 18, 2026, expanding the board to 10 members. Both have been appointed to serve on the audit and finance committees.
Ryals McMullian, chairman and chief executive officer, said the appointments reflect the company's focus on strengthening its portfolio and sharpening execution. "Their broad financial and transformation experience will be valuable as we continue to strengthen our portfolio, sharpen execution, and transform Flowers for future growth," McMullian said.
The New Directors
Mara brings more than three decades of consumer products finance experience. He retired in June 2025 as chief financial officer of The Simply Good Foods Company, where he helped guide growth and the integration of the Quest brand after its public-market debut. Earlier CFO roles included Dean Foods, Teasdale Latin Foods, and Roofing Supply Group, along with senior finance positions at William Wrigley Jr. Company and Gillette. He previously chaired the audit committee at Farmer Bros. Co., a major foodservice coffee and tea distributor — a background that maps well onto the distribution and supply chain pressures facing packaged food operators.
Plunk arrives with CPG, retail, manufacturing, and international finance credentials. He served as CFO and senior vice president of information technology at J&J Snack Foods, where his remit covered financial strategy, capital investment, supply chain expansion, and acquisition activity — experience directly relevant to the operational complexity Flowers manages across its national bakery network. Earlier in his career, Plunk held finance and audit leadership roles at Walmart and worked at The Coca-Cola Company and The Home Depot. He currently sits on the boards of WD-40 Company and Milo's Tea Company.
Why It Matters for Operators
For foodservice and retail buyers who source Nature's Own, Dave's Killer Bread, Canyon Bakehouse, Simple Mills, Wonder, or Tastykake, the board additions signal that Flowers is prioritizing financial discipline and strategic transformation at the governance level. Both Mara and Plunk have guided companies through acquisitions and integrations — directly applicable as Flowers continues to absorb Simple Mills and optimize its brand portfolio for a bakery category under sustained consumer pressure.
The dual appointments to audit and finance committees also suggest the board is building capacity to scrutinize capital allocation and supply chain investment more rigorously — a trend across large-scale food manufacturers navigating tariff exposure, ingredient cost volatility, and shifting distribution models. Operators tracking executive leadership changes across the packaged food sector will note that the two new directors collectively bring experience spanning snack foods, fresh dairy, Latin foods, and global beverage — a deliberately broad lens for a company managing a diverse multi-brand bakery portfolio.
