Florida International University has launched the FIU Cruise Excellence Center, a university-wide initiative designed to bridge academic research and the operational demands of the global cruise sector. The center is led by FIU's Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management and backed by a founding Cruise Executive Advisory Board composed of presidents, CEOs, a CFO, and other senior leaders from cruise lines, travel distribution, destination management, and maritime services.
The Advisory Board
The board is structured as an active working body, not a ceremonial one. Larry Pimentel, FIU Distinguished Cruise Executive-in-Residence and chair of the advisory board, framed the ambition directly: "Our opportunity is bigger than creating another academic center. It is to build a resource for the global cruise industry that is relevant, independent, connected and useful — one that brings together industry experience, academic rigor and the next generation of talent."
Board members will help FIU define high-value research priorities, shape academic curricula, expand internship and experiential learning programs, and develop executive education and micro-credentials. For hospitality operators and cruise brands competing for trained talent, that executive engagement at the curricular level is the practical value — shortening the gap between what schools teach and what hiring managers actually need.
Workforce and Research Priorities
FIU already operates an undergraduate Cruise Line Management track and a Master of Science in Hospitality Management with a specialization in Cruise Line Operations, giving the new center an established academic foundation to build on. The center's research agenda will cover workforce development, shifting consumer demand, emerging technology and artificial intelligence applications, environmental responsibility, crew well-being, destination and managed-tourism strategy, supply chain and logistics, and the economic and geopolitical forces reshaping global cruising.
Michael Cheng, dean of FIU's Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, said the Chaplin School will coordinate expertise from across the university — not only from hospitality and tourism — to match FIU's full disciplinary range to the cross-boundary problems the cruise industry brings forward. That interdisciplinary framing matters for an industry whose workforce needs cut across culinary arts, food and beverage operations, logistics, sustainability, and guest experience design.
For foodservice and hospitality workforce professionals watching the talent pipeline, the center's emphasis on micro-credentials alongside traditional degrees signals a more modular approach to credentialing — one increasingly common across the broader restaurant and hospitality industry. The long-term objective is to create clearer career pathways between academic preparation and employment throughout the cruise ecosystem, with stronger internship and experiential learning pipelines as a core mechanism.
