Travel insurance has formally entered Expedia Group's advertising ecosystem. Expedia Group has signed a multi-year marketing partnership with Redion — the travel protection and assistance company formerly known as Europ Assistance worldwide and Generali Global Assistance in the U.S. — making Redion the first insurance brand to join Expedia Group Advertising as a dedicated category partner.
The deal is significant for the hospitality and travel industry because it signals that major booking platforms are actively monetizing the ancillary services travelers consume around a trip, not just the trip itself. Co-branded editorial, on-platform experiences, and targeted activations are set to roll out across Expedia Group's brands — including Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo — beginning in Q3 2026.
The Numbers Behind the Move
Expedia Group's own research underpins the commercial logic. According to the company, 62% of travelers made a non-travel purchase tied to their most recent major leisure trip, spending an average of $500 beyond the trip itself. Additionally, 38% of Gen Z travelers purchased financial products or services before departure. For hospitality operators and travel brands watching how booking platforms evolve their revenue models, those figures illustrate the growing appetite to capture ancillary spend at the point of trip planning.
"Opening a category is not something we do often," said Jennifer Andre, Vice President, Business Development at Expedia Group. "Redion earned this as our first insurance advertising partner because of a 15-year track record of protecting our travelers. Together we can bring travel protection into the journey earlier and more easily than either of us could alone."
A Long Relationship Upgraded
The two companies are not new to each other. For more than 15 years, Redion — operating under previous brand names — has provided travel protection products to Expedia Group customers through distribution arrangements. This new agreement moves the relationship from product distribution into a strategic advertising alliance, giving Redion visibility at multiple touchpoints across the traveler journey rather than simply appearing at checkout.
Redion operates in more than 190 countries, employs over 12,000 people, and reports €5.8 billion in annual business volume. Its services span travel insurance, emergency and medical assistance, and employee benefits. The company's 2026 rebranding consolidates what were previously separate Europ Assistance and Generali Employee Benefits identities under a single global platform.
For hospitality and travel brands, the partnership is a marker of where large booking platforms are heading: deeper into the ancillary economy. As our hospitality industry analysis has tracked, booking platforms are increasingly positioning themselves as full-service travel commerce environments — and travel insurance is a natural next category. The move also reflects a broader pattern in travel and hospitality technology where first-party data is being leveraged to match high-intent audiences with relevant non-accommodation offers at scale.
"This partnership marks a defining moment for Redion," said Virginie Babinet, CEO, Travel Insurance & Assistance – Redion Group. "As we introduce the Redion brand to the world, we're doing it from the center of the traveler's journey, alongside a longstanding partner."
