Napa Valley estate marks first year of hospitality with leadership transition ELLMAN Estate Winery has appointed Michael Ploetz as General Manager as the family-owned Silverado Trail operation celebrates one year of welcoming guests. The appointment follows a formative year that saw the winery bring winemaking in-house and open The Studio, its tasting space at the base of Soda Canyon beneath Atlas Peak. Ploetz joined ELLMAN in early 2026 as Estate and Sales Director, working alongside outgoing General Manager Justin Vazquez, who led the winery for eight years. Vazquez will transition to a brand and creative advisory role as he launches a new creative studio with his wife.

Leadership depth in luxury hospitality Ploetz brings more than two decades of experience in luxury food and beverage operations. He has held senior F&B leadership roles with The Peninsula Hotels and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, and led operations and openings for the José Andrés Group in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. In Napa Valley, he previously directed direct-to-consumer and hospitality programs at estates associated with winemakers Michel Rolland, Philippe Melka, and Jennifer Williams. "After twenty years in luxury hospitality, I've learned that the most memorable places are not simply impressive; they are warm, personal, and deeply welcoming," Ploetz said. "That is what makes The Studio and the estate so special. Guests feel at ease from the moment they arrive, as if they have been invited into the Ellman family's home. As the estate grows, my focus is to preserve that feeling in every guest experience."

Estate operations and wine program The winery, founded by vintners Lance and Neil Ellman, operates a 20-acre vineyard planted in 1999 with the Palmer clone of Cabernet Sauvignon on ancient riverbed soils. The family drew inspiration from parallels between Napa's landscape and their native Stellenbosch region in South Africa. Winemaker Andy Erickson leads the wine program, with previous experience at Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, and Dalla Valle. He works alongside associate winemaker Patrick Nyeholt and vineyard manager Domenick Bianco. The estate produces a limited portfolio anchored by its flagship Elaine Cabernet Sauvignon, a two-barrel bottling made only in select vintages and dedicated to the family matriarch. "Our family came to Napa Valley to build something enduring and to bring generations of entrepreneurship into a more personal expression of hospitality," said Neil Ellman, proprietor. "Michael understands that vision. He brings the care and precision this estate deserves, and he shares our belief that a great winery is built on relationships as much as on the land."

Why It Matters

For Napa Valley hospitality operators, the appointment reflects a broader shift toward luxury experiences anchored in personal relationships and operational rigor. Ploetz's track record in high-end hotel and restaurant operations signals a focus on consistency and service standards—metrics that increasingly define competitive advantage in the region's tasting room sector.
