The Cape Town EDITION opened October 27 at Quay 7 on the V&A Waterfront, marking EDITION Hotels' first property on the African continent and adding a fifth dining and drinking venue to one of Cape Town's most visited mixed-use districts. The 142-room property joins a global portfolio that spans Tokyo, London, New York, and Lake Como, but its food and beverage identity is firmly rooted in the Western Cape.

The F&B Program

Executive Chef Phil Carmichael, whose résumé includes Berners Tavern at The London EDITION, leads the culinary program alongside South African beverage director George Hunter. Their approach centers on local sourcing: dry-aged meat, coastal fisheries, Winelands producers, and a wine list drawn predominantly from South African estates. The flagship restaurant, Shale, anchors the program with a seasonal menu that draws on those relationships — Saldanha Bay mussels in a curry velouté with seaweed salad and braised black rice offers a window into the kitchen's approach: familiar ingredients, quietly reframed.

Rooftop venue EAVE operates as an indoor-outdoor restaurant and bar beside the heated pool, moving from leisurely lunches through sunset cocktails and curated music programming after dark. The Pool Terrace handles all-day traffic from breakfast through light dinner. On the ground floor, the Lobby Bar is positioned as a neighborhood gathering point — morning coffee meetings giving way to evening drinks — while Punch Room offers a more theatrical experience, reviving the centuries-old punch-house tradition with a menu that includes Brandewijn, a house punch combining brandy, Pinotage, rooibos, pineapple, lemon, and winter spice. The layered, venue-within-venue model is increasingly common in upper-upscale and luxury hotel food and beverage strategy, allowing properties to generate revenue across multiple dayparts without cannibalizing covers.

Design and Local Craft

Designed by Shanghai-based Neri&Hu in collaboration with Cape Town architects, the building's aesthetic references the industrial warehouse structures that previously occupied Quay 7. More than six million bricks were laid by hand in shifting patterns across the façade. Interiors incorporate custom rugs woven by KwaZulu-Natal-based Shuttleworth Weaving, Zulu ukhamba vessels, and mouth-blown recycled glass from Eswatini. An art program curated by Cape Town's Southern Guild places work by Zanele Muholi, Usha Seejarim, and Chuma Maweni throughout the public spaces, including the spa and dining rooms — a deliberate move to connect the hotel's interiors to Africa's broader creative landscape rather than import a generic international luxury aesthetic.

General Manager Leonie Andereya framed the hotel's positioning plainly: "We want The Cape Town EDITION to feel as relevant to a Capetonian as it does to someone visiting the city for the first time." That dual local-and-visitor orientation is a consistent challenge for luxury hospitality operators entering established cultural capitals, where community credibility matters as much as global brand recognition. With a ballroom capacity of 200, two meeting studios, a boardroom, and a rooftop event space called Vantage, the property is also structured to compete for the high-end events and incentive travel market that Cape Town has been actively courting.
